HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck Grants Audience to Bhutan’s Asian Games Delegation Ahead of Aichi-Nagoya 2026
During the audience, His Royal Highness congratulated the athletes on earning the honour of representing Bhutan at the Asian Games and expressed his appreciation to the coaches for their continued dedication, guidance and commitment in preparing the athletes for the Games.
Addressing the delegation, His Royal Highness highlighted the honour and responsibility that come with representing Bhutan on the Asian stage. HRH encouraged the athletes to uphold the values of sportsmanship and recognise their role as ambassadors of Bhutan and role models for the younger generation. HRH emphasised that their influence extends beyond competition, as their dedication, discipline and achievements can inspire young Bhutanese to take up sport and pursue their own sporting aspirations.
“Anybody who picks up a bow has to look up to you, anyone who puts on a pair of boxing gloves has to aspire to be you and any child who laces up their running shoes on the track must be inspired by you.”
His Royal Highness noted that the athletes present were among the best in the country and encouraged them to embrace the opportunity with pride, responsibility and determination. HRH further noted that Bhutan has participated in the Asian Games on 10 previous occasions, with Aichi-Nagoya 2026 marking the country’s 11th appearance. His Royal Highness expressed his confidence that this is the best-prepared team to date and hoped that the athletes will represent Bhutan with distinction.
His Royal Highness also underscored the importance of continuously strengthening Bhutan’s sporting system, with the well-being and development of athletes and coaches remaining at its centre. HRH highlighted the ongoing development of Ecosystem 2.0, which aims to strengthen the support system for athletes and coaches and contribute to the advancement of sport in Bhutan.
Speaking on the value of the Asian Games beyond competition, His Royal Highness highlighted the opportunity for athletes to learn from and connect with competitors from 45 nations across Asia. HRH encouraged the delegation to make full use of the experience to broaden their exposure, gain valuable knowledge and build connections within the wider Asian sporting community. His Royal Highness conveyed his best wishes to the athletes and coaches as they prepare for the Games.
