Bhutan Olympic Committee

History

Bhutan first participated in the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics in the Archery discipline, with six archers representing the country. The National Sports Association of Bhutan (NSAB), established in 1972 under the chairmanship of the late Lyonpo Chogyal, served as the precursor to the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC). The NSAB functioned as the national sports governing body until the formation of the BOC in 1983.

Our Mission

Establish a representative and organized sport system that delivers sport and recreation for all.

A representative and organized sports system ensures accessible sports and recreation for all. It provides structured opportunities for participation at all levels. This promotes inclusivity, engagement, and well-being within communities.

Objectives

  1. Establish a robust sport governance system that will efficiently deliver organized sport to all Bhutanese.
  2. Develop the capacity of human resource in sport bodies to enable delivery of services and results.
  3. Provide opportunities and access to sport facilities by optimizing management and utilization of existing and new sport infrastructure.
  4. Identify and pursue mechanisms to secure the financial sustainability of development programs and accountability within the sport bodies.

5. Promote a vibrant sporting culture and overall sport development by engaging all forms of media and communication.

6. Promote sports for all and provide opportunities at all levels.

7. Engage all national and international partners and stakeholders through a clear strategic partnership framework.

In addition to the above 7 strategic objectives, the BOC must also fulfill the following obligations:

  • To act as the representative of IOC in Bhutan, and represent Bhutan in the IOC.
  • To develop and protect the Olympic Movement in Bhutan.
  • To propagate the fundamental principles of Olympism in Bhutan within the framework of sports activity and contribute to diffusion of Olympism in teaching programmes in schools and university establishments.
  • To ensure observance of Olympic Charter in Bhutan.
  • To encourage the development of high performance sports in Bhutan as well as sports for all.
  • To commit itself in taking actions against any form of discriminations and violence in sports on grounds of race, religion, politics and sex.
    To fight against the use of banned substances.
  • To maintain harmonious and cooperative relations with appropriate government bodies.
  • To exercise exclusive powers to represent Bhutan at the Olympic, regional and international competitions patronized by the IOC.
  • To grant recognitions to NSFs promoting Olympic sports.

Foundation

The BOC was formed in 1983 under the chairmanship of Lyonpo Dawa Tsering, the former Foreign Minister of Bhutan, as the necessary first step towards Bhutan’s admission into the Olympic Movement.

After having completed all necessary formalities, including establishment of five National Sports Federations, the BOC secured the formal recognition of the IOC on 23 November 1983, thereby placing Bhutan on the sports map of the world.

In addition to the IOC, the BOC is also a member of the following international sports bodies:

  • The Association of National Olympic Committees (ANOC)
  • The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA)
  • The South Asia Sports Federation (SASF)
  • The Asia-Pacific Oceana Sports Assembly (APOSA)
  • The Far East and South Pacific Games Federation for the Disabled (FESPIC)
