1st Extraordinary Annual General Meeting

Paro, May 31st 2015: His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, Representative of His Majesty the King and the President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee was re-elected unanimously by the BOC General Assembly, as the President of Bhutan Olympic Committee for the term 2015 to 2018. The elections took place at the 1st Extraordinary Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Khangkhu Resort in Paro, Bhutan. The BOC General Assembly is the highest decision making body of the Bhutan Olympic Committee. About 45 members from the National Sports Federations (NSF), Dzongkhag Sports Association (DSA), Sports Associations (SA) and Standing Committees attended the extraordinary AGM. HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck thanked all the members of the BOC General Assembly in placing their trust and faith in him and stated that he was humbled by his re-election as the President of the BOC. HRH stated that he would continue to build upon the reform process initiated in his first term, and work towards establishing an apolitical and democratic governance system in the sports sector, to effectively and efficiently deliver sports to all. Reflecting on his first term, HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck stated that, “although sports has now attained its rightful place in the national development agenda and is now an integral part of the 11th Five Year Development plan, there is still, so much that needs to be done, to create a firm foundation for a dynamic and vibrant sports sector in Bhutan. All stakeholders have to work collectively, to serve a common, higher purpose, for the benefit of our students, athletes, community and nation.” The first agenda of the AGM was the Presidential election of the Bhutan Olympic Committee for the year 2015-2018. Some of the other items discussed and presented to the members were: – Improving the BOC governance structure – Appointment of election committee for the election of the BOC Executive Committee – Budget Utilization Report for the fiscal year 2014 – 2015 – Presentation on annual budget for fiscal year 2015 – 2016 – Linking of the budgeting and planning process for DSA’s with that of the BOC & NSFs – Proposal on regularization of employees in the sports sector – Affiliation of 9 Dzongkhag Sport Associations and 2 Sports Associations to the BOC – Handing over of seed money to DSAs “This august gathering is an important milestone in the history of sports in Bhutan as it is the first time that all members have come together to collectively discuss issues pertaining to sports in Bhutan. It is the first step towards establishing a truly representative sport governance system to deliver organized sport to all Bhutanese. Further it is also a forum for leaders and officials in the sports sector to share, learn, enhance relationships, and reflect upon how to best deliver opportunities for all Bhutanese to participate in sports, through an apolitical and robust sports system.” Sonam Karma Tshering, Secretary General. Olympic Day Celebration, Bhutan

Paro, May 30th 2015: Tshoki Wangmo, 9 years old, studying at the Utpal Junior School in the 5th grade has never had the opportunity to experience Olympic Style Archery in her life, however, she got the opportunity to learn and shoot a few arrows at the Olympic Day Celebrations (ODC). To everybody’s surprise, Tshering managed hitting the bulls-eye twice with the help of the coaches and athletes from the National Archery Federation and the Bhutan Olympic Committee. Since 1984, the Olympic Day is celebrated to commemorate the birth of the modern Olympic games. The Olympic Day is celebrated in more than 160 countries by thousands of people all over the world. In keeping with its vision of taking sports to all youth in the country, the Bhutan Olympic Committee organized the Olympic Day Celebration at the Paro College of Education in western Bhutan. Although seen as international effort to promote fitness and well-being, the Bhutan Olympic Committee tried to engage as many sports enthusiast as possible to let them experience the Olympic Values of Friendship, Respect and Excellence. Over 1,400 students from 23 different schools in Paro participated in the celebrations, which included a 2.5 KM fun walk and a fun festival involving different sports such as Athletics, Football, Badminton, Basketball, Shooting, Archery, Boxing, Fitness & Bodybuilding and Table Tennis. Last year, the Olympic Day celebration was organized in Bumthang, central Bhutan with about 1500 participants.

SPORTS EXCELLENCE AND ACHIEVEMENT SCHOLARSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT

Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) and the Royal University of Bhutan (RUB) jointly announce the availability of up to 10 ‘Sports Excellence and Achievement Scholarships (SEA Scholarship)’ for the academic year 2015 in RUB Constituent Colleges. The scholarship will cover all tuition and boarding costs for 3 years. Applicants who meet the RUB admissions criteria with outstanding sporting achievement may apply. The scholarship application form and guidelines can be downloaded from the the link below or can be collected from the BOC office at Changlingmethang, Thimphu. Application forms should be submitted to the BOC Office on or before is 27th May, 2015. Self-financed students who have already been selected by the RUB may also apply. Ground breaking ceremony

The ground breaking ceremony for the construction of one storied Bhutan Amateur Athletic Federation’s (BAAF) office was taken place in the morning of the 31st March 2015 at the existing Thimphu Track & Field Stadium located below the Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School. The ceremony was graced by the Counselor Smt. Nina Tshering La of Embassy of India, Thimphu and Mr. Tshewang Rinzin, President of BAAF. The project is worth 5 million funded by Government of India under the Project Tied Assistance.

MoU signing

MoU signing between Mr. Dai Tamesue & Secretary General, BOC, at the Gangtey Palace, Paro dated 30th March. 2015. Mr Dai Tamesue, is a Japanese Olympian who competed in the year 2000, 2004 and 2008 Olympic games at Sydney, Athens and Beijing respectively. He won two bronze medals at the 2001 World Championships in Edmonton, Canada and 2005 World Championships in Helsinki, Finland. He still currently holds the Japanese national record for the 400meter hurdles at 47.89 secs. However, in 2012 Mr. Dai Tamesue retired and started an NGO called the Athlete Society to support athletes, of which he is the Chairman. Mr. Dai Tamesue hopes to use his experience and expertise as an athlete to support the Bhutan Amateur and Athletics Federation in developing and training its athletes. His aim is to be able to have Bhutanese athletes participate in the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics.

Sporting equipment gift from South Korea

Ms. Elisa Lee, member of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea and a Member of the Education, Culture, Sport & Tourism Committee is in Bhutan to assess the status of sports development in the Kingdom and see how best to assist and support its growth for the benefit of the youth of Bhutan. Her interest in Bhutan was piqued when she met with Bhutanese delegation to the Incheon Asian, led by His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck. She was the mayor of the Athletes Village at the Incheon Asian games and had the opportunity to interact with the Bhutanese athletes and officials during which she committed assist in the development of sports in Bhutan. Post Incheon Games, 2014, Miss Elisa Lee spearheaded an initiative to seek the financing for this gift from the Education, Culture, Sport & Tourism Committee in her capacity as a member of a National Assembly and a Member of the Education, Culture, Sport & Tourism Committee. This assistance the Bhutan Olympic Committee comprises of sporting equipment worth approximately US$ 44,000/- from the Education, Culture, Sport & Tourism Committee and the Korean Olympic Committee. The equipment includes include tracksuits, taekwondo floor mats, boxing uniforms, boxing gloves, bow handles, arrows, and bow stands, amongst others. As a former world champion in table tennis, Ms. Elisa Lee shared that it was her steadfast vision to try and help athletes from developing countries achieve their aspirations and perform at the international stage. Ms. Elisa Lee’s commitment to support athletes in countries such as Bhutan comes from her personal experience of trials and tribulations as a female athlete.
