Bhutan debuted in the Kho Kho World Cup 2025

Bhutan’s national Kho Kho teams debuted in the inaugural Kho Kho World Cup 2025, which began on the 13th and ended on the 19th at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium in New Delhi, India. The initial journey of Kho Kho for Bhutan was started back in 2019 through a collaboration with the Kho Kho Federation of India. The team envisioned the sport to foster teamwork and discipline among the participants.

The team consisted of 5 founding members:

  1. Jigme Dorji
  2. Dinesh Chettri
  3. Panchaman
  4. Pema Dorji
  5. Til Bdr Subba

During the 4th Asian Kho Kho Championship held in Tamulpur, Assam, in 2023, the team consisted of 12 men and 12 women accompanied by 8 officials. The Men’s team secured 5th position, qualifying the team for the inaugural World Cup Kho Kho in 2025. In 2024, the club started coaching at Loselling Middle Secondary School, where a few students from the school and other nearby schools joined for the practice. Unfortunately, the team disbanded as there was no official association, training regime, and tournaments to be played to engage the players.

The club had to select new athletes for the World Cup as all previous athletes who participated in the Asian Cup were students. Few of them were engaged with their own works, and the rest were with the examinations. With only a few of the founding members left, they couldn’t select athletes from school due to unavoidable circumstances, after which they decided to approach De-Suung and were accepted by the De-Suung HQ to provide full support. After receiving official notice and invitation the journey of Bhutan’s men and women Kho Kho team began with proper training on 3rd November 2024 but the final selection of the players was done on 10th November confirming the actual participants and thereafter started with actual rigorous training schedules for the selected players. The De-Suung team trained intensively for over two months, with 30 players; 15 men and 15 women.

With the support from the Kho Kho federation of India, the head coach Mr. Anup Chakraborty was hired from Assam, who was also part of the 2023 team. The federation also supported logistics, travel, and other expenses for the coach.

The men’s team was placed in Group A alongside India, Nepal, Peru, and Brazil, while the women’s team competed in Group C with Nepal, Sri Lanka, Germany, and Bangladesh.

In the men’s category, the team won against Peru with a point of 90 – 24 on the 14th of January and 64 – 14 against Brazil on the 15th of January. The team lost against India with a point of 71 – 34 and 98 – 8 against Nepal on 16th January.

In the women’s category, the team won against Germany with a point of 66 – 22 on the 15th of January. The team lost against Nepal with a point of 91 – 24 on the 14th of January, 68 – 19 against Sri Lanka, and 112 – 6 against Bangladesh on the 16th of January.

However, both men’s and women’s teams bowed out from the World Cup but they delivered a promising performance against other teams captivating the hearts of the audience.

The Indian ambassador His Excellency Sudhakar Dalela and officials of the Indian Embassy warmly welcomed and granted hi-tea for the Kho Kho team of Bhutan at the Indian Embassy in the residency along with the officials from Bhutan Olympic Committee.
