Inauguration of Multi-sport hall in Trashigang

19th December 2014, Trashigang: His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, Representative of His Majesty the King and the President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) inaugurated the newly built Multi Sport Hall (MSH) in Trashigang on 19th December,2014. The community MSH was constructed with the aim to productively engage the youth and encourage them to participate in sports. It was funded by the Royal Government of Bhutan with contributions from the Olympic Council of Asia, under its Olympasia Project. The total estimated cost of construction was about Nu. 24 million and the project works began only in November 2012. The MSH will be handed over by the BOC to the Trashigang Sports Association for its optimal use and sustainable management. The facility is designed to maximize the usage of space, given its scarcity and will cater to indoor basketball, volleyball, badminton, table tennis and taekwondo. This was because according to the Bhutan Sport Baseline Survey (BSBS) 2010, the above sports were cited as the most popular sports played in Trashigang. Nearly 75% of the people surveyed in Trashigang Town in 2010 played volleyball, basketball, badminton and table tennis. Further, it can also be used for other recreational and community events. Although urban land resources are scarce the Dzongkhag administration had earmarked adequate land for the facility in view of its growing youth population and recognizing its overall benefit to the community. Meanwhile, the Bhutan Basketball Federation and the Bhutan Table Tennis Federation, organized coaching camps in Trashigang for basketball and table tennis, from the 10th December to the 21stof December.

Mr. Raninder Singh, the President of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI), officials and athletes of the association are visiting Bhutan to participate in the first ever Indo-Bhutan Big Bore shooting championship (IBSC), to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty the Druk Gyalpo. The objective of the event is to promote the sport of shooting and uplift the standard of shooting in Bhutan. In this regard, as big bore shooting is a new sport for the Bhutan shooting federation, 10 Bhutanese shooters, 8 men and 2 women were trained in modern shooting techniques and skills in India. The Bhutanese big bore shooting team will consist of 6 men and 6 women. The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) and the Bhutan Shooting Federation (BSF), on a rotation basis, will conduct the Indo-Bhutan shooting championship among the shooters of India and Bhutan, every year. Such friendly competitions with India will also help further strengthen the already strong relationship, peace and harmony amongst the people of India and Bhutan. The Bhutan Shooting Federation was established in 1997 by the then minister for trade and industry, Lyonpo Om Pradhan under the patronage of His Majesty the King Jigme Kheser Namgyal Wangchuck. Shooting as a sport is still in its infancy in Bhutan and the federation aims to promote and popularize the sport in the country and train potential shooters to achieve international acclaim.
