Her Majesty the Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck Graces and Inaugurates the Reopening of Thimphu Basketball Center.
Thimphu, 26 November 2025 — The Thimphu Basketball Center in Thimphu, one of Bhutan’s oldest and most significant sporting landmarks, was graced and inaugurated yesterday on 25th November, 2025 by Her Majesty the Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck and the members of the Royal Family, adding profound significance to the reopening of the Thimphu Basketball Center, which has now been fully renovated with modern, accessible, and inclusive amenities.
First constructed in the early 1970s during the visionary reign of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, the basketball center has long served as a central venue for public recreation and various tournaments. After decades of unwavering community use and only minimal maintenance, the facility underwent transformative upgrade for more than two months, marking a renewed commitment to the development of basketball in the country.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials including Cabinet Ministers, representatives of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, members of the national sports federations, and officials from the Bhutan Foundation. The event commenced with the auspicious Marchang offering, invoking blessings for the successful future of the center and Bhutanese athletes.
In her address, Her Majesty the Queen Mother reflected on the evolution of basketball in the country and paid tribute to the extraordinary leadership of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, stating that “His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo has always been the true champion of youth,” a recognition of His Majesty’s enduring dedication to nurturing the well-being, potential, and aspirations of Bhutan’s younger generation during early years of modernization.
The reopening of Thimphu Basketball Center signifies the completion of the project “Reviving Bhutan’s Historic Basketball Court”, an initiative launched through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on 15 September 2025 between the Bhutan Foundation and the Basketball Federation of Bhutan (BFB). The partnership aimed to rehabilitate the deteriorating facility and upgrade it to contemporary standards befitting both national athletes and the broader public.
Her Majesty Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck and the Royal Family members then formally inaugurated the center, symbolizing the beginning of a strengthened chapter for basketball development in the country. A vote of thanks was delivered by the Bhutan Foundation, expressing deep gratitude for the leadership, support, and collaboration that brought the project to fruition.
To commemorate the occasion, Her Majesty Queen Mother Tseyring Pem Wangchuck and the Royal Family members graciously took a ceremonial basketball shot, a moment that filled the venue with joy and pride, leaving a lasting impression on all present. The ceremony concluded with a group photo session, marking an important and memorable day in Bhutan’s sporting history.
With its upgraded facilities and renewed purpose, the Thimphu Basketball Center is now envisioned as a dynamic hub for training, national competitions, community programs, and youth engagement, reflecting an initiative of the organization in promoting sports excellence and healthy lifestyles for the community.
