The Open Thimphu Valley Taekwondo Championship 2026 for Junior & Sub-Junior concluded on 25 October at Zilukha Middle Secondary School, Thimphu, bringing together 206 young athletes from schools across Thimphu Dzongkhag and Thromde for two days of competition, skill development and sporting camaraderie.
Organised by the Thimphu Dzongkhag Taekwondo Association, with support from the Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Bhutan Taekwondo Federation, the championship aimed to promote Taekwondo among school students while encouraging physical fitness, discipline, confidence and sportsmanship. The event gave young practitioners a platform to demonstrate their skills, challenge themselves, and gain valuable experience in a competitive sporting environment.
At the end of the championship, Zilukha Middle Secondary School secured the top position with six gold, ten silver and seventeen bronze medals. Etho Metho Primary School finished second with seven gold, nine silver and ten bronze medals, while Dechencholing Higher Secondary School claimed third place with seven gold, two silver and seven bronze medals.

The final standings were determined by a points-based system, awarding seven points for each gold medal, three for silver, and one for bronze.
Beyond the medal standings, the championship highlighted the importance of grassroots sports in nurturing young talent and building a strong sporting foundation. Through taekwondo, young athletes learn not only technical skills and competitive discipline but also respect, perseverance, self-control, and the values of fair play. Such initiatives encourage students to embrace active and healthy lifestyles, develop confidence and build positive habits that extend beyond the sporting arena.
By bringing schools together through a shared passion for Taekwondo, the championship contributed to promoting wider participation in sports, fostering healthy competition and inspiring more young people to make physical activity an integral part of their lives.
