Thimphu Gears Up to Host 15th South Asian Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championships 2025

Bhutan is all set to host the 15th South Asian Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championships 2025, scheduled from 11th to 15th June in the capital city of Thimphu. This prestigious international championship is expected to bring together top athletes, officials, and fitness enthusiasts from across South Asia, turning the serene city into a vibrant hub of strength, discipline, and sportsmanship.

The arrival of key dignitaries yesterday marked the beginning of this highly anticipated event. Datuk Paul Chua, President of the World Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation (WBPF) and the Asian Bodybuilding and Physique Sports Federation, landed in Thimphu accompanied by Christina Kam, Executive Director of WBPF, along with several other respected officials from the international bodybuilding fraternity.

Speaking exclusively to BOC Media, Datuk Paul Chua expressed his deep affection for Bhutan, calling it his “second home.” He shared, “Coming back to Bhutan fills me with happiness and pride. I am truly delighted to see this beautiful country hosting the 15th South Asian Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championships. Bhutan is not just peaceful and scenic, but it also has the heart and potential to host world-class tournaments. Many of our athletes, guests, and their families are excited to visit Bhutan—not just to compete, but to experience its rich culture, nature, and cuisine.”

He reminisced about his first visit to Bhutan two decades ago, saying, “Back in 2005, I came to help set up the foundation for bodybuilding in Bhutan and to guide young athletes. Looking at the remarkable progress since then, and the emergence of world-class athletes from Bhutan, gives me immense pleasure. This is my fifth visit here, and every time I see Bhutan’s passion for the sport growing stronger.”

Datuk Paul further stated that Bhutan stands a strong chance in this championship despite the stiff competition. “Bhutan has the spirit, discipline, and now the experience. If we can invest in training 12 to 15 young athletes consistently, Bhutan can soon produce champions at the global level,” he said.

Meanwhile, Christina Kam, Executive Director of WBPF, highlighted the increasing participation of women in bodybuilding and physique sports. “It is heartening to see more women stepping into the sport here in Bhutan. It’s not easy, especially in this part of the world, but seeing young ladies break barriers and embrace a culture of fitness and healthy living is absolutely inspiring,” she said.
