The depth and dynamism of the Olympic Council of Asia at the start of another Asian Games year will be on display at the 32nd OCA General Assembly in Manila next week. As well as receiving reports from the OCA’s 16 committees, the General Assembly will also hear updates on the upcoming multi-sport games during the new Olympic cycle to 2016 and beyond.
These events include:
• 17th Asian Games in Incheon, Korea, from September 19- October 4, 2014
• 4th Asian Beach Games in Phuket, Thailand, from November 14-23, 2014
• 5th Asian Beach Games in Nha Trang, Vietnam, in 2016
• 8th Asian Winter Games in Sapporo, Japan, in 2017
• 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, in 2017
• 3rd Asian Youth Games in Hambantota, Sri Lanka, in 2017.
With host city contracts already signed for the 18th Asian Games in Hanoi, Vietnam, in 2019 and for the 4th Asian Youth Games in Surabaya, Indonesia, in 2021, the forward-planning of the OCA and eagerness of the National Olympic Committees to support the events presents a bright future for sport in Asia.
The 32nd OCA General Assembly will be held at the Philippine International Convention Centre in Manila on Saturday, January 18 – one day after the 64th OCA Executive Board meeting at the Sofitel Hotel and the Asian Games Centennial Celebrations to mark the first recognised international multi-sport games in Asia, in Manila in February 1913.
The General Assembly is due to start at 9am and conclude at 5pm, with a lunch break from 1-2.30pm. It will be followed by the OCA Press Conference at 5pm.
Other agenda items include the reports of the OCA’s five regional Vice Presidents for West Asia, Central Asia, South Asia, South East Asia and East Asia, and the presentation of the OCA Merit Award.
From an international perspective there will be reports from the IOC’s Olympic Solidarity, the World Anti-Doping Agency on the new WADA Code and on the progress and plans for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 2016.
