4th Cohort of Accelerated Foundational Sports Science Course Commences

The opening ceremony of the 4th Cohort of the Accelerated Foundational Sports Science Course was held today at the Conference Hall of the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC), marking another significant step toward strengthening the scientific foundation of coaching and athlete development in Bhutan.

The accelerated programme, running from 15th June to 5th July 2026, brings together 21 participants from various sports disciplines and coaching backgrounds. To date, more than 50 participants have successfully completed the Foundational Sports Science Course, contributing to the growing pool of evidence-based coaches and sports practitioners in the country.

As modern sport continues to evolve, success is increasingly driven by the effective application of sports science. Sports science provides coaches and athletes with evidence-based knowledge in areas such as anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, sport psychology, injury prevention, recovery, and performance analysis. By understanding how the human body responds to training and competition, coaches can design safer, more effective, and athlete-centered training programmes that maximize performance while minimizing injury risks.

The Accelerated Foundational Sports Science Course has been developed to equip coaches and sports practitioners with practical scientific knowledge and competencies that can be directly applied within schools, clubs, academies, and national sports programmes. The course emphasizes experiential and project-based learning, encouraging participants to translate theory into practical coaching solutions through model-making activities, collaborative learning, and hands-on applications.

Organized by the Bhutan Olympic Committee through the National Coaching Academy, the programme aims to strengthen the professional capacity of Bhutanese coaches and sports personnel by promoting evidence-based coaching practices, structured training methodologies, athlete monitoring, nutrition, recovery strategies, and long-term athlete development. The initiative aligns with BOC’s broader vision of building a highly competent sports workforce capable of supporting athletes to excel at regional and international levels.

Over the next 20 days, participants will engage in a comprehensive learning journey covering key areas including functional anatomy, exercise physiology, movement science, coaching methodologies, sports nutrition, injury prevention and management, communication skills, sports administration, information and communication technology in sport, fitness training, and periodization.

Through a combination of classroom instruction, practical sessions, projects, and presentations, participants will gain the knowledge and confidence required to integrate sport science principles into their daily coaching practices.

The Accelerated Foundational Sports Science Course is conducted by the National Coaching Academy (NCA) with support from the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) and Olympic Solidarity. This collaborative initiative reflects a shared commitment to strengthening coach education and enhancing the quality of sports development in Bhutan. Through the support of Olympic Solidarity, the programme provides coaches and sports practitioners with access to essential sport science knowledge and practical skills, helping to build a stronger and more professional sporting ecosystem in the country.
