The Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Olympic Council of Malaysia today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Hilton Nagoya, marking an important new chapter in sports cooperation and strengthening the longstanding friendship between the two countries.

The MoU was signed by His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, and Tan Sri Dato’ Sri (Dr.) Mohamad Norza Zakaria, President of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, on the sidelines of the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026. The agreement establishes a framework for closer cooperation between the two National Olympic Committees, with particular emphasis on athlete and coach development, joint training opportunities, technical knowledge exchange, sports science and performance preparation.

For Bhutan, the partnership comes at a time when strengthening the foundations of the sporting system has become an important priority. The focus is not only on preparing athletes for competition, but on creating stronger pathways for their long-term development and building the capacity of the coaches and technical personnel who support them. Speaking at the signing ceremony, His Royal Highness said the MoU should serve a purpose beyond sport itself, strengthening the friendship and relationship between the two countries while creating opportunities for meaningful sporting development. His Royal Highness emphasized that sustainable progress in sport depends on building strong foundations and developing the wider sporting ecosystem.

Malaysia’s experience and established sporting systems present an opportunity for Bhutan to learn, exchange knowledge and adapt relevant practices to its own context. The cooperation outlined in the MoU will support areas including athlete development, coach education, joint training camps, technical workshops, sports science and performance preparation. These areas also complement Bhutan’s broader efforts under Ecosystem Upgrade 2.0, providing opportunities to strengthen both sporting performance and the people and systems behind it. His Royal Highness expressed the hope that the agreement would develop beyond a one-time engagement and become a long-term and structured partnership through which athletes and coaches from both countries can train, learn and develop together.

For Malaysia, the agreement represents an opportunity to extend its technical expertise and establish closer cooperation with Bhutan’s sporting community. Speaking at the ceremony, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri (Dr.) Mohamad Norza Zakaria thanked His Royal Highness for proposing the signing of the MoU during the Asian Games and described it as a meaningful opportunity to bring the two National Olympic Committees closer together. On behalf of the Olympic Council of Malaysia, he offered technical support to Bhutan, with the initial cooperation focusing on badminton and archery.

He emphasised that the partnership should begin with practical and achievable initiatives before gradually expanding as cooperation develops and mutual confidence grows.

As Bhutan continues to strengthen its sporting ecosystem, the partnership with Malaysia provides a new avenue for athletes, coaches and sports professionals to learn, train and grow together, building a relationship that extends beyond the field of play. The MoU was signed in the presence of representatives from both National Olympic Committees during the 20th Asian Games Aichi-Nagoya 2026, bringing together two sporting nations with a shared commitment to the Olympic values of Excellence, Respect and Friendship.
