Bhutan Open Karate Championship 2025
Thimphu, May 12 – The Bhutan Open Karate Championship 2025 concluded yesterday, May 11, in Thimphu. The championship was organized by the Bhutan Karate Association, with support from the Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Government of India. The event brought together 63 athletes and 20 officials from four teams: Bhutan (host), and three Indian teams representing Delhi, Sikkim, and Kalimpong.
The final day of the event was attended by Ms. Namasha Kesaria, Third Secretary of the Indian Embassy, alongside officials from the Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Bhutan Karate Association. The day began with welcome remarks by Dawa Lham, President of the Bhutan Karate Association, who thanked the guests and acknowledged the importance of international cooperation in sports development. Her speech was followed by dazzling cultural performances. The atmosphere then turned competitive as athletes entered the medal bouts, which were the highlight of the day.
In her address, President Dawa Lham shared her vision for Bhutanese karate and its international aspirations: “This championship is more than just a competition,” said Dawa Lham. “We are not just training athletes here—we are shaping national pride and preparing future champions who can represent during the Asian and world stage. I deeply thank the Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Government of India for standing with us as a consistent partner in sports development. Their support makes events like this not just possible, but successful.”

Over the two days, the event featured kata and kumite competitions across various age and gender categories, including sub-junior, cadet, junior, and senior levels. The championship concluded with a formal medal and award ceremony, led by Ms. Namasha Kesaria and President Dawa Lham, during which participants and officials were honored for their efforts and achievements.
Bhutan emerged as the overall champion, securing 15 gold, 10 silver, and 4 bronze medals. Team Kalimpong from India claimed the first runner-up title with 8 gold, 8 silver, and 6 bronze. Team Delhi followed as second runners-up with 8 gold and 5 silver, while Team Sikkim finished fourth with 5 gold and 2 silver medals.
The Bhutan Open Karate Championship 2025 not only promoted athletic excellence but also strengthened ties and cultural exchange between Bhutan and India.
