BTF/ATF U16 Tournament – ATF Category 2 Brings International Junior Tennis Talent to Bhutan
Bhutan is hosting the BTF/ATF Under-16 Tournament, an Asian Tennis Federation (ATF) Category 2 competition bringing together promising young tennis players from across Asia and beyond to compete for valuable ranking points and gain international experience.
The tournament features 31 players, including 21 international participants and 10 Bhutanese players, and began from 26th October, 2026. The international contingent comprises 16 boys and five girls representing Bahrain, India, the United States of America, Malaysia and Singapore. Bhutan is represented by six boys and four girls, providing local players with an opportunity to test their skills against international opponents and gain valuable experience on home courts.
A major highlight of this year’s competition is its elevation from Category 3 to ATF Category 2, marking a significant step forward for the tournament and junior tennis development in Bhutan. The higher tournament category enhances its competitive standing and offers greater incentives for players seeking to improve their Asian rankings, potentially attracting a wider pool of participants from different regions in future editions.

As an Asian junior ranking tournament, the competition provides young athletes with an opportunity to earn valuable ranking points and strengthen their positions within the regional junior tennis circuit. These rankings can play an important role in determining seeding at subsequent tournaments, while regular participation in recognised competitions helps players gain the experience and exposure needed to progress through the junior tennis pathway.
For Bhutanese players, hosting an ATF Category 2 tournament at home is a valuable opportunity to compete against international opponents, assess their performance and develop their game without the additional costs and challenges of travelling abroad. The experience also exposes local players to different playing styles, competitive standards and match situations, helping them build confidence and prepare for future international tournaments.
Beyond the rankings, the BTF/ATF Under-16 Tournament reflects the broader efforts to promote tennis, encourage greater participation and strengthen the sport’s development pathway in Bhutan. Providing young players with access to structured international competition is essential to nurturing emerging talent and inspiring more children and young people to take up the sport.
The tournament is being supervised by Somnath Manna from Kolkata, India, representing the Asian Tennis Federation, supporting the conduct of the competition in line with the applicable tournament standards.
With its upgraded category and international participation, the BTF/ATF Under-16 Tournament represents an important opportunity for Bhutan to strengthen its place on the regional junior tennis calendar. For the participating players, every match is a chance to gain experience, improve their rankings and take another step towards their ambitions in competitive tennis.
