“Creating Awareness on the Importance of Sports Medicine and Sports Science as an Integral Part of Sports Development in the Country”

Paro, Bhutan, December 12, 2015: The Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) with the support from the Olympic Solidarity (OS) conducted a Sports Medicine Awareness Program titled “Creating Awareness on the Importance of Sports Medicine and Sports Science as an Integral Part of Sports Development in the Country” on the 12th and 13th of December, 2015.

Dr. M. Jegathesan, the Chairman of Medical Committee and Anti-doping Commission of Olympic Council of Asia and Dr. Teh Kong Chuan, Senior Consultant, Sports Medicine Centre, Khoo Teck Puat Hospital in Singapore were the resource persons for the program.

The opening remarks by Chairman of Medical Committee and Anti-doping Commission of Olympic Council of Asia followed by his presentation where he mentioned that the core idea of conducting Sports Medicine program is “to train and enhance the skills of the physiotherapists, doctors, coaches and trainers for the protection of health and prevention of injuries of the athletes in sport”.

Around 30 participants from various departments of the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital (JDWNRH) like Orthopedic, Nutrition, Physiotherapy and the officials and coaches from the National Sports Federations attended the Awareness Program.

The Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee recognized the important role that sports medicine plays in protecting the health of athletes. Further, he assured to form Sports Medicine Committee in the near future.
