Bhutan Hold Hong Kong to Goalless Draw as Women’s
Tri-Nation Cup 2025 Kicks Off in Thimphu

Changlimithang Stadium, Thimphu

The Women’s Tri-Nation Cup 2025 got underway this afternoon at Changlimithang Stadium, and it opened with a resilient display from the hosts Bhutan, who held a technically strong Hong Kong side to a hard-fought 0–0 draw.

It was a chilly but spirited evening in Thimphu as fans turned up in good numbers to cheer for the Dragon Ladies, who were up against Hong Kong – a side ranked significantly higher in FIFA’s women’s rankings. Despite the difference on paper, Bhutan showed real grit and character, especially in defense, to keep the visitors at bay.

Hong Kong started brightly and dominated possession for much of the first half. Their movement off the ball and speed down the wings put Bhutan under pressure early on, but the home side grew into the game as the minutes ticked by. Led by captain Pema Choden Tshering and inspired by the tireless efforts of star forward Deki Lhazom, Bhutan began creating chances of their own, sparking roars from the home crowd.

There were a few nervy moments from Hong Kong but Bhutan’s backline, marshalled impressively, held firm. Bhutan Goalkeeper  had a standout performance between the posts, making several crucial saves and rightly earning praise at full-time.

The tournament continues with Malaysia taking on Hong Kong on May 31, followed by Bhutan’s final fixture against Malaysia on June 3 – both matches also set to be held at Changlimithang Stadium.
