Young Bhutan Pair Show Early Promise, Push Opponents
Despite Tough Opening Day
Sanya, China — The results may not have gone their way, but Bhutan’s beach volleyball team walked off the sand with something just as important on Day 1 of the 6th Asian Beach Games Sanya 2026 belief.
Up against hosts China in the opening match, Dorji and Rangdal were thrown straight into the deep end. Facing a well-drilled and experienced side, Bhutan went down in straight sets 21 to 12 and 21 to 11. It was a tough start, but there were glimpses of intent in the way they approached the game. They showed no hesitation in taking on rallies, and at times matched the pace with confidence that belied the stage.
The second match against Syria told a different story. Bhutan came out sharper, more settled, and with a clear sense of purpose. They took the first set 21 to 13, playing with control and energy that put their opponents under pressure. It was the kind of response that showed growth within hours, not days. Syria, however, found their rhythm in the next two sets, taking them 21 to 11 and 15 to 9, closing out the match.
Even in defeat, there was a quiet statement being made. This is a team still finding its feet at this level, yet already showing signs that they belong. The coordination, the willingness to take risks, and the ability to bounce back within the same day all point to a group that is learning quickly and not shying away from the occasion.
What stands out is not just the effort, but the composure. For a pair stepping onto this stage for the first time, there is a calmness in how they build points and communicate, something that cannot be taught overnight.
Attention now turns to the next matches. On 24 April, Bhutan takes on Iran, a contest that could test both their physical and mental strength. A strong start, like the one seen against Syria, could put them in a position to push for their first win.
On 25 April, they face Sri Lanka, a match that could open doors if Bhutan holds their nerve and maintains consistency through the sets. There is a sense that this team is growing with every point they play. The margins are still there, but so is the potential. And sometimes, that is exactly where the story begins.
