Moving Together in Tribute
Minjey Middle Secondary School witnessed a truly memorable and meaningful celebration on 2 June 2026 as students, teachers, and parents came together to mark Olympic Day 2026 through a day filled with movement, sports, environmental stewardship, and community spirit.
The occasion carried special significance as it coincided with the 52nd Coronation Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo and Social Forestry Day, transforming the celebration into a tribute to the visionary leadership of the Father of Modern Bhutan and the values of unity, service, sustainability, and national progress that continue to guide the nation today.
Guided by this year’s Olympic Day theme, “Let’s Move,” the school community embraced the global call to action with enthusiasm and purpose. Throughout the day, students were encouraged to discover the joy of movement, embrace healthy lifestyles, and recognize the power of sport in bringing people together. More than just a sporting celebration, the event became a platform for learning, inspiration, and community engagement.

The day began with a fun run through a forested pathway that brought together students and teachers in a shared celebration of health and togetherness and embracing nature. Against the scenic backdrop of Minjey, the participants moved with energy and excitement, demonstrating the spirit of unity that lies at the heart of both the Olympic Movement and Bhutanese society. The fun run not only promoted physical activity but also strengthened the bonds between the school and the wider community.
The official programme commenced with zhabten (prayer) offerings dedicated to His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, the national anthem, and addresses from the officiating vice principal and representatives from the Bhutan Olympic Committee. Their messages highlighted the importance of sports in shaping young lives and emphasized the Olympic values of excellence, friendship, and respect. Students were encouraged to pursue active lifestyles, develop strong character, and contribute positively to their communities through discipline, teamwork, and perseverance.
In recognition of Social Forestry Day and in honour of the 52nd Coronation Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, students and teachers, and visiting officials participated in a plantation programme that added a meaningful dimension to the celebration. The activity reflected the profound legacy of environmental conservation and sustainable development championed by the Fourth Druk Gyalpo while encouraging young people to become responsible stewards of nature. As saplings were planted across the school, the activity served as a powerful symbol of growth, responsibility, and hope for future generations.

The celebration continued with an exciting volleyball tournament that brought the school community together in the spirit of healthy competition. Students displayed remarkable determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship throughout the matches. The volleyball court became a focal point of excitement as classmates, teachers, and supporters cheered passionately from the sidelines, creating an atmosphere filled with energy and school pride. Every serve, rally, and point reflected the growing sporting culture being nurtured among young people through the Sports in School initiatives.
Aerobic activities conducted throughout the programme further reinforced the message of Olympic Day. Students enthusiastically participated in the sessions, demonstrating that movement can be both enjoyable and beneficial. The activities served as a reminder that staying active is not only important for physical wellbeing but also contributes to mental health, confidence, and overall quality of life.
Beyond the individual activities and competitions, the celebration carried a deeper significance. It demonstrated how sport can serve as a powerful vehicle for education, personal development, and community building. Through participation in sports and collective activities, students experienced valuable lessons in leadership, resilience, cooperation, and mutual respect qualities that will continue to guide them both inside and outside the classroom.
The event concluded with a prize-awarding ceremony that recognized the achievements and efforts of participating students and teams. While certificates and awards celebrated sporting excellence, the true success of the day was reflected in the smiles shared, friendships strengthened, and memories created throughout the celebration.
As the festivities came to a close, Minjey Middle Secondary School left behind a powerful message: that sport has the ability to inspire, unite, and transform lives. Through Olympic Day 2026, the school not only celebrated movement and healthy living but also paid tribute to the enduring legacy of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, whose vision continues to shape a strong, united, and progressive Bhutan. The occasion served as a reminder that by embracing the values of sport, environmental responsibility, and community service, young people can contribute meaningfully to the continued growth and wellbeing of the nation.
Through the Sports in School Project, the Bhutan Olympic Committee, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development and with support from Olympic Solidarity, continues to strengthen grassroots sports development and create opportunities for young people across the country to grow through sports.
