Sports in Schools Expands to Eastern Bhutan
With the introduction of the Sports in School Project to the wider school communities by the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD) and the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC), there is a renewed sense of commitment and excitement. This new phase in eastern Bhutan is expected to create more opportunities for students while also bringing a positive impact to the wider community.
The Bhutan Sports in School Project continues to grow as an important initiative focused on strengthening school sports and student development across the country. With its expansion to eastern Bhutan, the project is reaching schools that have had fewer opportunities in structured sports programmes, making the initiative more inclusive and accessible.
In the earlier phase, schools such as Chundu Armed Forces Public School in Haa, along with Khangkhu Middle Secondary School and Woochu Lower Secondary School in Paro, showed how regular sports activities can improve student participation, teamwork, and the overall school environment. These schools set a strong example of how school sports in Bhutan can play a key role in student growth and engagement.
The project now moves to three eastern schools, Panbang Primary School in Zhemgang Dzongkhag, Ngalam Lower Secondary School in Pema Gatshel Dzongkhag, and Minjey Middle Secondary School in Lhuentse Dzongkhag. This expansion highlights the ongoing effort to develop sports at the grassroots level and support students across different regions of the country.
What makes this phase of the programme different is that it goes beyond just playing games. Students are also given opportunities to explore areas such as photography, videography, content creation, commentary, and even small-scale sports-related business activities. This helps students understand that there are many ways to be involved in sports, not just as players but also in supporting roles.
These added activities are expected to make school sports more engaging and meaningful. In places like Panbang, Ngalam, and Minjey, such initiatives can help bring schools and communities together, encouraging wider participation and creating a lively sporting environment.
The collaboration between MoESD and BOC reflects a continued effort to make sports a regular and valued part of school life. By gradually expanding and strengthening the programme, the initiative is helping build a strong foundation for the future while also supporting students in learning new skills and gaining confidence.
As the project continues in eastern Bhutan, it is expected to play an important role in shaping how sports are experienced in schools. From everyday activities on school grounds to new opportunities beyond the field, the programme is helping students grow in different ways while also strengthening the role of sports within education.
In the long run, efforts like this contribute to building a stronger sporting culture in Bhutan, one that begins in schools and grows with students over time, creating a lasting impact on both individuals and communities. This initiative is a collaborative project of the Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Ministry of Education and Skills Development, supported by Olympic Solidarity.
