The Gyaltsuen’s Annual Invitational Golf Championship 2026 Begins Tomorrow, Bringing Together 156 Golfers in Celebration of Friendship and Sportsmanship
The Bhutan Golf Federation, under the auspices of the Bhutan Olympic Committee and with the support of the Embassy of India in Thimphu, will officially launch The Gyaltsuen’s Annual Invitational Golf Championship 2026 tomorrow at the Royal Thimphu Golf Club.
Held in celebration of the Birth Anniversary of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen of Bhutan, the five-day championship will bring together 156 golfers from Bhutan in a spirit of sportsmanship, friendship, and cooperation.
The tournament will be played in an 18-hole stroke play format, with the first three days dedicated to qualifying rounds, followed by the final two days of competition. Golfers will vie for honors in both the men’s and women’s category, with awards presented to the top 10 Net winners and top 5 Gross scorers. An amateur category will also feature two Gross prizes. In addition, golfers will compete for special awards, including Closest to the Pin, Longest Drive, and Maximum Birdies.
The championship has been conceived as a special sporting event to commemorate the Birth Anniversary of Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen while strengthening the bonds of friendship between Bhutan and India through sport. Golf has long served as a platform for fostering meaningful connections among government officials, members of the diplomatic community, and the private sector, and this tournament aims to further those relationships while promoting sporting excellence and goodwill.
The event also seeks to promote golf and sportsmanship in Bhutan, encourage wider participation in the sport, and provide opportunities for engagement among sporting institutions, government agencies, diplomatic partners, and the private sector. The championship has also received generous support from the corporate sector. Dasho Topgyal Dorji, Chairman of the Tashi Group, has contributed Nu. 500,000 towards the event, reaffirming the group’s commitment to supporting sports development and community initiatives in Bhutan. In addition, beverages for the event are sponsored by Mr. Tsenchok Thinley of Tashi Beverages.
Speaking ahead of the championship, Sonam Tobgay Dorji, General Secretary of the Bhutan Golf Federation, emphasized that the event is about much more than winning. “The essence of this championship is not the incentive to win, but to celebrate friendship, build networks, and uphold the values of sportsmanship both on and off the course,” he said.
Organizers expect the championship to serve as a meaningful tribute to Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen while contributing to the growth of golf in Bhutan and strengthening sporting collaboration between Bhutan and India. The tournament will conclude on 7 June 2026 at the Royal Thimphu Golf Club.
