One Goal, One Nation, One Heart
Paro FC’s Historic Night for Bhutan
This article is written by Victor Gurung, Chief of Media, Innovation & Technical, Bhutan Olympic Committee.
Sometimes, football is not just a game. It’s a prayer answered, a dream lived, and a heartbeat shared by an entire nation. Last night, under the rain-soaked skies of Changlimithang Stadium, that truth became our reality.
At the 90+3 minute mark, with tension thick in the air and hope clinging to every breath, a pass from our National Team Captain, Nima Wangdi, cut through the Afghan defense like destiny itself. And there was Evan Asante – our Ghanaian warrior in orange – who struck the ball with the weight of 750,000 Bhutanese hearts behind him. The net rippled, the whistle blew, and in that moment… Bhutan erupted.
Inside the stadium, over 4,000 voices roared as one. Online, more than 4,000 were glued to the YouTube live stream, with countless others refreshing Paro FC’s social media, praying for that one magical moment. Messages of love poured in from every corner of the globe – from Bhutanese in Perth and New York, to young fans in the villages of Zhemgang and Haa. One photo stood out: a 3-month-old baby, wrapped in a Paro FC jersey by proud parents who wanted him to be part of history before him could even walk.
The boys in red faced a fierce Abu Muslim Farah FC (Afghanistan) side – strong, disciplined, and relentless. But for 90 minutes, Paro FC held their ground. And then, in one golden second, they turned a nation’s belief into reality.
Leading them was none other than Puspalal Sharma – our magician of Bhutanese football, the man who has given us moments that made us scream, cry, and believe. Last night, he did it again.
Speaking after the match, his voice heavy with emotion, Puspalal said:
“The love and blessings that poured in from every corner of Bhutan… that was tougher than the match itself. We were carrying the dream of every Bhutanese in the stadium, and every Bhutanese watching online. This win is not just for Paro FC. This is for Bhutan. And when we come together as one, we can do anything.”
It wasn’t easy. Bringing the boys together for such a high-stakes game against such a strong opponent took every ounce of preparation, discipline, and heart. But they played not just for themselves, not just for the club, but for the country.
Asante himself, the hero of the night, shared:
“I’ve scored goals before, but this one… this one was different. The pass from Nima, the clock ticking… I felt something cold run through me, like a wave. I just hit it, and it went in. This goal is for Bhutan, and playing for Paro FC is one of the most special things in my life.”
The rain poured, but no one in the stands moved. Nobody wanted to leave. There was no rush to beat the crowd – because the crowd was the heartbeat of the night. And when that ball hit the back of the net, many swore they felt the very stadium shake.
Paro FC’s Karma Jigme summed it up simply:
“This match was important for us, and the boys made it happen. Thank you to Head Coach Puspalal for leading us through, and thank you to everyone who believed.”
And so, Bhutan wakes up today not just with the joy of victory, but with the pride of knowing that in football – as in life – when we stand together, we are unstoppable.
Paro FC now marches into the group stage of the AFC Preliminary Challenge League. The journey continues. The dream lives on. And Bhutan, united in orange, is ready for whatever comes next.
Because last night proved it: We are one nation. One team. One heart.
