Serving as a member of the Bhutan Football Federation since 2020, Vice President from 2021 to 2023, and now President since 2023, Jigme’s journey has been marked by his dedication to the sport and its future in Bhutan.

To say that Jigme Tshewang is passionate about football would be an understatement. His journey into the world of football is not marked by the loud fanfare of public recognition, but rather by the quiet and relentless dedication of a man who has long believed in the power of sport to transform lives. He is a man of few words, but when it comes to the betterment of football in Bhutan, his actions speak volumes.

What sets Jigme apart, however, is not just his success in expanding TUFC’s reach, but his deep, personal commitment to the game. Many are unaware that behind the strategic decisions and the accolades, there are moments of quiet reflection, moments where this humble leader sheds a tear for the sport he loves, and yet continues to push forward, determined to build something lasting for the next generation.

So, here we are, witnessing a leader who is not just a president but a passionate advocate, a behind-the-scenes architect, and a true champion of football in Bhutan. His journey continues to inspire and his work, undoubtedly, will leave a legacy for years to come.

Can you share a brief history of Transport United FC and what makes it one of Bhutan’s most iconic football clubs?

Transport United FC’s story is one of passion, unity, and relentless determination. It all began in 1999 when a group of members from the Road Safety and Transport Authority (RSTA) gathered in their office canteen. What started as a simple conversation about forming a team for a local tournament soon transformed into a dream, one that would change the landscape of Bhutanese football forever.

The club was built from the ground up, funded by the everyday workers — bus drivers and RSTA staff — which is how it earned the name Transport United FC. This unique foundation speaks volumes about the heart and soul of the club: a community-driven, people-powered team. There was no lavish budget, just a deep love for football and a shared belief that they could achieve greatness, no matter where they started from.

By 2001, Transport United had already begun making its mark, earning a place in the AFC and solidifying its official status. Over the last 25 years, it has not only competed at the highest levels but also set a benchmark for excellence both on and off the field. The club has become a dominant force in Bhutanese football, a symbol of perseverance and excellence.

What truly sets Transport United apart is its unwavering commitment to developing young talent. The club has always believed in nurturing the next generation of football stars, with over 400 academy players, 58 senior players, and a dedicated team of coaches and staff. Transport United is more than just a club; it’s a family that fosters growth, teamwork, and a never-give-up attitude.

Through its strong legacy, loyal fan base, and dedication to youth development, Transport United has proven time and again that it’s not just about winning — it’s about creating opportunities, building character, and inspiring the future of Bhutanese football. It’s a club that stands as a beacon of hope, a true testament to what can be achieved when passion and hard work come together.

As the oldest football club in Bhutan, how has TUFC evolved to remain competitive at the highest level?

You know, Transport United has been through a lot. There were moments when we didn’t know if we’d make it. I can still remember times when our finances were so tight, it felt like the club might have to shut down. But what kept us going wasn’t money or resources. It was the people. The passion. The heart of everyone who’s been part of this journey.

I’ve seen it firsthand — people who had so little, yet gave so much. Some gave their time when they were stretched thin. Others dug into their own pockets just to make sure we could keep the lights on. It wasn’t easy, but that’s what made us strong. Every person who believed in this club gave more than just their energy. They gave a piece of themselves. That’s how we kept moving forward.

As the years passed, we learned a lot from the tough times. We figured out how to stay competitive, even when we didn’t have everything we needed. We knew we had to invest in our future, so we focused on youth development. We brought in better coaching to help our players grow. We adapted, we got smarter, and we worked harder. But even more than that, we just kept refusing to quit. Even when the road ahead looked impossible, we kept pushing, kept fighting.

What makes TUFC special is simple: we never give up. We’ve been knocked down, we’ve faced setbacks, but we always get back up. And with each challenge, we’ve become a stronger club. It’s not about the victories, although those are great. It’s about the people, the passion, and the belief that no matter what happens, this club will always keep moving forward.

What does it mean for you personally to lead this historic club?

Leading this club is something I can’t put into words. It’s a deep honor, one that I don’t take lightly. Football has been my passion for as long as I can remember, but I didn’t have the opportunities back then that these young players have today. I often think to myself, “If only I had been given the chance back then.” Now, being in this position, it’s not just about me anymore. It’s about giving the next generation a shot — the chance to live out their dreams, just like I wish I could have.

When I see these young talents coming through, playing with that same fire I had when I first started, it’s almost like I’m living my dream through them. Watching them grow, watching them succeed — it’s one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever experienced. But it’s also more than just football. What we’re building here is about giving back to the community. It’s about creating jobs, providing young people with a positive outlet, and offering them something to be proud of. Every day, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to be in this position — not just to lead a football club, but to make a difference in people’s lives.

When I think about it, there’s no greater privilege than this. I get to serve my country, build something meaningful, and do it all through something I love. It’s humbling, honestly. And it gives me a sense of purpose that drives me every day. This isn’t just a club for me; it’s a legacy I’m proud to be a part of.

TUFC has participated in numerous international events this year. How has this exposure helped the players and the club?

Honestly, it’s been incredible. Seeing our boys step onto international fields and wear the Transport United jersey with pride — it means everything. This year, especially with the invitations from Nepal and other neighboring countries, it felt like people are finally seeing the work we’ve been putting in all these years.

For the players, it’s more than just football — it’s a chance to dream bigger. They get to test themselves, stay sharp during the off-season, and gain the kind of confidence you can’t teach in training. And for the club, it’s helped us grow in recognition and build important connections. We’re not just representing TUFC anymore — we’re carrying Bhutan with us every time we step out there. That’s something truly special.

Finishing as the second runner-up in the BOB Premier League 2024 is a huge milestone. What were the key factors behind this success?

Honestly, it came down to two things: discipline and unity.

This wasn’t an easy season — every point was earned through sweat and sacrifice. But what pushed us forward was how tightly we stood together. Teamwork, for me, goes beyond the eleven players on the pitch. It’s the coaches planning late into the night, the women’s team selling tickets and cheering us on, our academy boys running as ball boys, and everyone pitching in with heart. Every match felt like the whole club was on that field.

And discipline — that’s what kept us grounded. It’s choosing the long-term goal over short-term comfort. Training even when your body wants to stop. Showing up with the same energy every single day. That’s what our boys did.

We may have finished second, but the way we earned it — together — that’s a victory in itself.

Managing a football club must come with a lot of pressure — from behind-the-scenes work, to motivating your team, to handling challenges both on and off the field. How do you keep it all together, and what support does the club really need?

It’s hard to explain just how much goes into running a football club unless you’ve lived it. What people see on the matchday — the players, the goals, the celebrations — that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Behind the scenes, there’s a full-time hustle. Sorting out player contracts, fixing training schedules, handling travel plans, chasing after sponsorships, dealing with last-minute crises — sometimes it feels like everything’s on fire and you’re trying to put it out with a bucket.

But you do it. You do it because you love this club.

One of the biggest struggles has been keeping the team stable. We lose players every season — some to better offers, some to personal commitments. It hurts, not just for the team, but for the chemistry we’ve built. And let’s be honest, most of our players aren’t full-time professionals. They juggle work, studies, and football. So keeping them match-fit across the season is a challenge in itself.

Then there’s the financial side — the part people don’t like to talk about, but it’s very real. Running a club costs money, and getting sponsors in Bhutan isn’t easy. Most companies don’t yet see football as a viable marketing investment. That’s why when people like Chhundu Sawmill, JayPee Group, and this season, TATA BlueScope Steel Pvt Ltd, come forward — not for profit, but because they believe in what we’re doing — we feel nothing but gratitude. Still, we need more support, and often, we have to look outside Bhutan to find it.

But through all this — the stress, the uncertainties — what keeps us going is the people. The shared vision. I make sure everyone, from the players to the coaches to the ball boys, knows why we’re doing this. We celebrate even the small wins. We listen to each other. And when things get tough, we don’t run — we talk, we adapt, we move forward.

And that’s where the fans come in. You have no idea how much it means when people show up, cheer us on, and make noise for the team. That energy carries us. If we’re going to grow, we need our community to stand with us. Because football, at its heart, is about belonging — and when everyone feels part of it, magic happens.

So yes, it’s tough. But if you ask me if it’s worth it — every late night, every tough call, every moment of doubt — the answer is always yes.

How does TUFC work to develop young talent, maintain professionalism, and ensure the future of football in Bhutan? What practices are in place to uphold high standards and what are the club’s efforts in grassroots football?

At Transport United FC, we believe that building a successful football club starts from the ground up—literally. Developing young talent is at the heart of our mission, and we’ve made that a priority through the establishment of the Transport United Academy. This academy is dedicated to players under the age of 19 and offers a structured training program with qualified coaches who are assigned to specific age groups. This way, every young player gets the right level of attention, guidance, and development suited to their growth stage.

Our academy isn’t just about training—it’s a direct pipeline to the senior team. Players participate in Youth Championships and Grassroots Tournaments organized by the Bhutan Football Federation, gaining real-match experience and exposure early on. We don’t just train athletes—we prepare them mentally, physically, and emotionally for the next level. This investment ensures that not only does TUFC benefit from a strong base of local talent, but so does Bhutanese football as a whole.

To maintain professionalism and excellence, we focus on the basics that matter:

  • Clear communication – Everyone knows what’s expected. We talk openly, whether it’s about tactics, feedback, or goals.
  • Discipline – Being on time, training hard, and staying committed is non-negotiable.
  • Growth mindset – We support our coaches and staff in learning and improving through workshops, licenses, and training.
  • Team-first attitude – Everyone works together. Success is shared, and every role is valued.
  • Positive culture – We keep it respectful, focused, and motivated—on and off the field.

We also visit schools and support local grassroots efforts to inspire more young kids to pick up the game. Our goal is to grow football from the roots and give every young player a chance to dream big.

What steps is TUFC taking to support and promote its women’s team?

At TUFC, we’re fully behind the growth of women’s football. While we’ve seen promising young talents come through our grassroots programs, the real challenge is player retention. Many girls drop out because football still isn’t widely seen as a viable career path for women.

We’re working hard to change that mindset. Our focus is on:

  • Player development – Providing quality coaching, better training, and opportunities to grow.
  • Creating belief – Encouraging families and players to see football as a real option.
  • Improving standards – The stronger our players become, the more competitive and visible the women’s game will be.
  • Safe and supportive spaces – We want our women’s team to feel valued, respected, and empowered.

With better facilities and growing interest, we’re committed to building a future where women can dream big and play football professionally—just like the men. TUFC is here for that change.

What is your long-term vision for Transport United FC (TUFC), and how do you plan to elevate the club’s presence both within Bhutan and internationally? Additionally, what message would you like to share with TUFC fans and potential sponsors who may want to be part of this journey?

My long-term vision for TUFC is to build a strong academy and ensure the club’s financial sustainability. A solid academy will help develop homegrown talent, benefiting both TUFC and the national team, while a self-sustaining model will allow us to focus on growth rather than survival.

To strengthen TUFC’s position, we are focusing on player development, forming strategic partnerships, and increasing our visibility internationally through tournaments and collaborations. This will help elevate our performance and attract opportunities for both players and the club.

To our fans, your support is what drives us forward. You are the heart of TUFC, and we’re grateful for your passion and belief. Together, we’re building something special.

To potential sponsors, partnering with TUFC is more than just branding—it’s about supporting the growth of football in Bhutan and being part of a movement that empowers youth and promotes national pride. Your support will help us grow and create lasting impact for the sport.

Finally, what is your message to young footballers who dream of playing for TUFC?

To all aspiring footballers dreaming of playing for TUFC, your dreams are achievable, but it requires hard work, discipline, and perseverance. Football is not just about natural talent—it’s about resilience, dedication, and the desire to improve every day. There will be challenges, but it’s those who push through adversity who succeed.

At TUFC, we nurture young talent and provide a platform for growth. If you have the passion and determination, we’ll give you the opportunity to shine. Believe in yourself, work hard, respect the game, and give your best in every moment. One day, it could be you wearing the TUFC jersey, representing the club, and inspiring others. Keep pursuing your dreams, and when the chance arises, be ready to seize it!
