Bhutan Aquatics Federation Collaborates with Inspire Institute of Sports for High-Altitude Training Programme

The Bhutan Aquatics Federation (BAF) is hosting the Inspire Institute of Sports (IIS), Karnataka, India, for a High-Altitude Technical Training and Coaching Programme in Bhutan. The IIS contingent arrived on 10 February and will undergo 19 days of intensive high-altitude training. The programme reflects a shared commitment to high-performance athlete development, technical excellence, and regional cooperation in aquatics.

The training programme brings together elite swimmers from IIS, providing them with structured high-altitude exposure, technical refinement, and performance-focused coaching in Bhutan’s unique training environment.

The Inspire Institute of Sports is India’s first privately funded, world-class high-performance training centre. IIS provides comprehensive support to elite athletes through international-standard coaching, sports science, strength and conditioning, recovery services, and performance analysis. The institute plays a key role in preparing Indian athletes for major international competitions, including the Olympic Games, Asian Games, and World Championships.

The training programme is led by Sandeep Sejwal, Olympian, former national record holder, and a bronze medallist at the Asian Games. As a coach, he brings extensive international competition experience, strong technical insight, and a performance-driven approach that supports athlete development at the highest level.

The programme features Sajan Prakash, India’s first swimmer to qualify for two consecutive Olympic Games and the Indian national record holder in 200 m butterfly event with a time of 1:56.38. A multiple national record holder and international medalist, his participation adds significant value to the training environment through his experience, professionalism, and leadership. His presence is expected to inspire athletes and contribute positively to the overall technical and competitive standards of the camp.
Benefits of High-Altitude Training

High-altitude training offers several performance advantages, including:

• Improved aerobic capacity and oxygen utilisation
• Enhanced endurance and race efficiency
• Long-term physiological adaptations beneficial at sea level
• Improved mental resilience and focus
• Structured recovery and performance optimisation

The Bhutan Aquatics Federation views this collaboration as an important step toward strengthening technical knowledge exchange, enhancing coaching capacity, and positioning Bhutan as a valuable destination for high-performance altitude training.
