Bhutan Cricket Council Board hosted for the first time
ICC Level 3 Coaching Course

Thimphu, April 27 — Bhutan Cricket officially inaugurated the ICC Level 3 Coaching Course today. Proudly welcoming total of 21 participants from various Asian region. The first of its kind to be hosted in Bhutan by the Bhutan Cricket. The ICC Level 3 Coaching Course is a high-level cricket coaching certification offered under the structure of the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The Course is an advanced, internationally recognized program designed for experienced cricket coaches who have completed Level 2 and have several years of practical coaching experience; it focuses on developing high-level technical, tactical, physical, and mental skills, along with leadership, communication, team management, and long-term athlete development, preparing coaches to work in professional, elite, or international cricket environments through a combination of online learning, intensive in-person workshops, assignments, and practical assessments which are conducted over several months.

The inauguration was attended by the President of Bhutan Cricket, Thinley Wangchuk Dorji, CEO of Bhutan Cricket Council Board, Damber S. Gurung, along with board members Mr. Chimmi Dorji and Ms. Tshering Zangmo of Bhutan Olympic Committee, participant coaches, and ICC Educators for the special occasion.

During the inaugural, speaking on behalf of His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, President of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, the President extended a heartfelt welcome to everyone. He thanked the International Cricket Council (ICC) for trusting Bhutan Cricket to host such a prestigious event. He encouraged everyone to explore Bhutan’s beauty and hospitality during their stay — and hopefully to return again in the future.

The President also drew inspiration from the words of His Majesty The King, sharing, “His Majesty has always reminded us that Bhutan must aim to achieve what others cannot, to excel in sports by focusing on creativity and quality rather than sheer numbers. His Majesty recognizes sports as a powerful tool to promote national pride, foster unity, and inspire a sense of collective responsibility,” he said.

The President wished all the Master Educators and Coaches great success over the coming days. He expressed hope that the course would help produce a new generation of elite, high-performance coaches, ready to strengthen the sport both locally and internationally.

The ICC level 3 coaching course being the high-level cricket coaching certification offered by the ICC, CEO of Bhutan Cricket Council Board Dambar S. Gurung shared his excitement for hosting first of it’s kind in the country stating, “We are truly grateful to the ICC for trusting us to host this historic event. Our dream is to make Bhutan a preferred destination for international events, and this is a great start. Over the next five days, it will be a valuable learning experience for me and my team. We sincerely thank the Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Royal Government of Bhutan for their strong support. We look forward to making this event a success and building a strong foundation for future collaborations.”

The ICC Level 3 Coaching Course, spanning five days, consist of 21 participants which includes coaches and board members from the 14 Asian countries. The course covers advanced core skills, sports sciences, physiology, and cricket management, led by  four master educator (professional trainers) with over 20 years of experience, including former Test and International cricketers.

The Day 1 focused on learning cultures, safe environments, emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and understanding others. The Day 2 will include skill acquisition, player development through biomechanics, integrated planning, risk management, integrity, anti-doping awareness by the Bhutan Olympic Committee, and sightseeing to Dochu La. On Day 3, participants will work on communication skills, advanced batting and fielding, with outdoor practical sessions. The Day 4 would cover advanced pace bowling, spin bowling, and wicketkeeping, followed by outdoor practicals. The final day, Day 5 will conclude with a biomechanics and skill acquisition workshop, candidate presentations, practical assessments, and a closing session highlighting the next steps for the future.

Kencho Norbu and Kumar Subba, are two Bhutanese participants currently attending the ICC Level 3 Coaching Course.

Sharing their thoughts and experiences about the ongoing program. Kencho Norbu shared that with very few in Bhutan having completed the ICC Level 3 course, he sees this as a great chance to improve his skills and help cricket grow. He hopes to gain deeper technical knowledge, structure better training sessions, and share international coaching practices with others.

Also, Kumar Subba expressed his gratitude to Bhutan Cricket for the opportunity. He wants to up-skill himself with the knowledge set which will empower him to give back more effectively to players and the cricket community in the country.
