Bhutan Inaugurates National Coaching Academy
Bhutan has taken a groundbreaking step in its sporting journey with the inauguration of the National Coaching Academy at the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) premises today. Graced by His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck, this initiative is set to transform sports education, empower coaches, and elevate Bhutanese athletes to new heights.
The event saw the participation of key figures from Bhutan’s sports federations, including the President of the Bhutan Football Federation, the President of the Bhutan Cricket Council Board, the President of the Athletes Commission of Bhutan, the Vice President of the Bhutan Tennis Federation, the General Secretary of the Bhutan Tennis Federation, and the President of the Bhutan Karate Association.
Adding an international dimension, the event was also attended by Mr. Shigeki Sarado and Ms. Sharly Natsu Yazaki from Nippon Sports Science University, Japan, reinforcing Bhutan’s commitment to global collaboration in sports education.
In his opening remarks, Sonam Karma Tshering, Secretary General of the BOC, outlined the academy’s core mission:
“This academy will serve as a hub for knowledge, innovation, and collaboration. It will equip our coaches and school sports instructors with the tools, techniques, and insights necessary to unlock the full potential of our athletes. By integrating the latest advancements in sports science, we will ensure our coaches can optimize performance, prevent injuries, and foster a culture of excellence.”
He further emphasized that the academy is built on the principles of Develop, Empower, and Excel, representing a major leap forward in Bhutan’s commitment to sporting excellence.
“This is more than just a training center—it is a foundation for a lasting sporting culture. Our goal is to cultivate discipline, dedication, and a hunger for learning in our coaches so they can effectively guide our athletes and elevate Bhutanese sports on regional, Asian, and global platforms.”
The academy will immediately roll out its programs, starting with:
- March 26-27: Coaches Development Course – A specialized program aimed at refining coaching methodologies and professional skills.
- March 28: Foundational Sport Science Certificate Program – A 25-day comprehensive course designed by BOC, offering essential knowledge and practical skills in sports, exercise, and health.
These courses will cater to coaches from various national sports federations, along with self-financed individuals passionate about advancing their careers in sports coaching.

Through a comprehensive curriculum and practical training, graduates will be equipped to contribute to the advancement of sports and health industries in Bhutan and beyond.
