Bhutan Olympic Committee Launches Tree Plantation Drive
in Collaboration with Bhutan Ecological Society
The Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC), in collaboration with the Bhutan Ecological Society, initiated a tree plantation drive on March 19, 2025, as part of the Mountains to Mangroves Initiative – 10 Million Trees by 2030. This initiative underscores BOC’s dedication not only to promoting sports and physical well-being but also to fostering environmental sustainability in alignment with Bhutan’s national philosophy of Gross National Happiness (GNH).
As part of this initiative, the Bhutan Ecological Society contributed 106 saplings, carefully selected to enhance biodiversity and promote long-term environmental sustainability. A total of 66 saplings were planted in the vicinity of Olympasia House, the headquarters of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, while 40 were planted at Bebena, near the Thimphu Aquatics Center. The trees included a variety of fruit-bearing species such as apple, cherry, apricot, peach, and persimmon, contributing to both ecological preservation and community well-being.
This plantation drive marks a significant milestone in integrating environmental consciousness within Bhutan’s sports fraternity. By creating green spaces around key sporting infrastructure, the BOC aims to lead by example in promoting sustainable sports development. This initiative is the first step in a larger commitment to engaging athletes, sports enthusiasts, and the broader community in environmental conservation efforts.
Event Coordinator for the Tree Plantation Drive Mr. Sonam Namgyel stated, “This initiative is a meaningful step toward integrating sustainability within Bhutan’s sports community. By planting trees, we are not only contributing to environmental conservation but also setting an example for future generations. The Bhutan Olympic Committee is committed to fostering a balance between sporting excellence and ecological responsibility, ensuring a greener and healthier future for all.”

The Bhutan Olympic Committee remains dedicated to expanding such initiatives in the future, reinforcing the idea that sports and sustainability can go hand in hand to create a lasting positive impact on the environment and society.
