Bhutan Set for High-Intensity Thailand Open T20I 2026 Against Japan, Thailand and Bahrain

Thailand Open T20I Series 2026

The Bhutan men’s national cricket team will depart for Bangkok tomorrow to compete in the Thailand Open Men’s T20I Series 2026, scheduled from 25 to 28 February at the Terdthai Cricket Ground in Bangkok.

The four-nation T20 International tournament brings together Bhutan, hosts Thailand, Japan and Bahrain, three competitive associate sides that have steadily climbed the ICC Men’s T20I rankings in recent years.

Japan currently sit highest among the participating teams in the ICC T20I standings, followed closely by Thailand and Bahrain. Bhutan, though ranked below the trio, have been narrowing the gap through consistent performances and increased international exposure. On paper, the rankings favour their opponents but in T20 cricket, momentum and belief often outweigh numbers.

Bhutan head into the tournament with valuable match practice behind them. The national side recently faced Bahrain at the Gelephu International Cricket Ground, gaining crucial competitive exposure at home. Those matches were not just about results; they sharpened decision-making, strengthened combinations, and tested temperament under pressure.

Over the past year, Bhutan have played several fixtures on home soil, and that run of matches has given the young squad significant game awareness. The players have grown tactically smarter, more adaptable, and increasingly confident in high-pressure phases, qualities that are essential in the shortest international format.

Captain Thinley Jamtsho made the team’s intentions clear before departure.

“The boys are prepared, and we are going there not just to participate but to win. Cricket in Bhutan has been a long journey. In recent times, we have shown improvement and even surprised stronger sides. With full respect to our opponents, their ICC rankings are higher than our, but we are ready to play good cricket and aim to win matches.”

Ahead of the team’s departure, a meet-up session was held at the Bhutan Cricket Head Office, where CEO Damber S. Gurung addressed the players with an emotional and motivating message. He reminded the senior members to become “thinking cricketers”, players who read situations, absorb pressure, and respond intelligently.

He acknowledged the remarkable progress Bhutan Cricket has made in recent times, progress once only imagined, crediting it to collective effort, discipline, and unity within the squad.

“This is the moment to be accountable to your role and responsibility,” he told the players. “Fight till the last ball. Do not give up. The belief is there , you can capitalise on key moments. Bhutan Cricket believes in you, and the whole nation believes in you.”

The tournament schedule will test that resolve. Bhutan open their campaign against Bahrain on 25 February, face Thailand on 26 February, and take on Japan on 27 February in what promises to be a tightly packed and physically demanding stretch of cricket.

Head Coach Kumar Subba, who leads the side into the competition, expressed confidence in the squad’s preparation.

“The boys are fit and have trained well ahead of this tournament. We have not made many changes. It is a young side supported by experienced senior players and match-winners. The team balance is good, and the combination looks strong.”

The blend of youth and experience could prove decisive. Bhutan’s younger players bring energy and fearlessness, while the seniors offer calmness in crunch situations ,a balance every successful T20 side seeks.

While Japan’s structure, Thailand’s home advantage, and Bahrain’s physical presence make this a tough field, Bhutan arrive in Bangkok with something equally powerful: preparation, unity, and growing self-belief.
