Bhutan Shooting Federation Concludes
Week-Long Talent Identification Program

The Bhutan Shooting Federation (BSF) successfully wrapped up a week-long Talent Identification Program aimed at identifying and nurturing the upcoming shooters. Conducted in collaboration with Indian Olympian Jitu Rai and national coach Garbha Raj Rai from the Jitu Rai Shooting Academy, the program was the first of its kind to be hosted in Bhutan with such close involvement from internationally recognized shooting professionals.

Held over seven days, the initiative combined both theoretical lessons and hands-on shooting sessions. Participants were introduced to the core principles of shooting, including techniques, posture, mental focus, and above all—safety rules. The training covered both 10m air rifle and 10m air pistol disciplines, giving participants a well-rounded exposure to Olympic-style shooting sports.

The program kicked off with two days of basic training, laying a strong foundation in shooting mechanics and theory. This was followed by three intensive days of live shooting practice, where each participant had the chance to apply what they had learned under the watchful guidance of seasoned coaches.

Coach Garbha Raj Rai expressed his enthusiasm and pride in participating in the Talent Identification Program in Bhutan, stating, “I’m very happy and proud to be a part of this incredible program. It’s been a rewarding experience to train and guide the young talents of Bhutan, and I truly believe that with the right dedication and support, at least one or two of them will eventually represent Bhutan on the international stage.”

From this pool of emerging talent, 14 shooters were selected for the next phase of training. These individuals will now undergo two months of advanced coaching, after which they will participate in a trial shoot to assess their growth and readiness for future competitions.

Speaking about the program, Dorji Phurba coach from the Bhutan Shooting Federation shared his excitement. “This has been a valuable experience for both the participants and for us as an organization. We now have a better sense of where the potential lies and how we can develop it further,”.

The involvement of Olympian Jitu Rai and Coach Garbha Raj Rai added credibility and inspiration to the event, offering young Bhutanese athletes a glimpse into what’s possible with dedication and the right support.

With more such initiatives planned in the future, the Bhutan Shooting Federation is setting its sights firmly on developing world-class athletes, one shot at a time.

While the participants walked away with valuable skills and a deeper understanding of the sport, the program was also a crucial step for Bhutan Shooting Federation in building a strong talent pipeline. The long-term goal: to prepare Bhutanese shooters to compete—and excel—on the international stage.

Coach Jitu Rai expressed his excitement and optimism about the rising shooting talents in Bhutan, saying, “I’m thrilled to see young athletes showing interest and passion for a sport like shooting. With the right dedication, guidance, and support, I’m confident that some of these talented individuals will go on to represent Bhutan on the international stage, whether now or in the future.” Coach Jitu Rai’s words highlight both his faith in the athletes and his belief in the promising future of shooting sports in Bhutan.
