Bhutan U15 School Baseball & Softball Season 4:
Stepping into the Dynamic Sports

Thimphu, Bhutan — June 2, 2025

What began as a modest introduction to baseball and softball in Bhutan has rapidly evolved into one of the most exciting youth sports movements in the country. Since the Bhutan Baseball & Softball Association (BBSA) gained affiliation with the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC) in July 2021, the association has been making impressive strides—starting with the launch of the inaugural U15 Bhutan Amateur Baseball League in December 2021. Despite the ongoing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic at the time, the first season—featuring five schools and teams comprising five boys and five girls each—was a significant success, concluding succesfully in June 2022.

Now in its fourth season, the U15 School Baseball & Softball League has become BBSA’s annual flagship event under its youth development program. Over the years, the league has crowned four different champions:

  • Season 1 (2022):Taba Lower Secondary School
  • Season 2 (2023):Dechencholing Higher Secondary School
  • Season 3 (2024):Jigme Namgyel Lower Secondary School
  • Season 4 (2025):Dechencholing HSS, reclaiming the title

Baseball category

Dechencholing Higher Secondary School (Winner)
Jigme Namgyel Lower Secondary School (1st runners-up)

Softball Category

Changzamtog Middle Secondary School (Winner)
Lungtenzampa Middle Secondary School (1st runners-up)

A Glimpse from Season 4:

The 4th edition of the league kicked off on May 17, 2025, bringing together 150 young athletes from schools across Thimphu. Eight teams—four in baseball and four in softball—competed for the coveted champion trophy.

In the baseball final, Dechencholing HSS clinched the title after a spirited match against Jigme Namgyel LSS. On the softball side, Changzamtog Middle Secondary School made history by winning their first-ever title, defeating the impressive newcomers from Lungtenzampa MSS.

But the league is more than just a tournament—it serves as a key talent identification platform for BBSA’s U15 Academy. The standout athletes from each season are scouted for further training, with the ultimate goal of representing Bhutan at the U18 national level. Today, nearly 50 athletes are enrolled in the U12 and U15 academies, and top talents from Season 4 have already begun joining the ranks.

What’s Next for BBSA?

With its eyes set firmly on the future, BBSA continues to expand its development programs. Upcoming initiatives includes:

  • U18 School League (Season 3)
  • Inaugural Baseball5 Junior & Senior Leagues
  • Adult League & Club Championships

The momentum is clear—baseball and softball are gaining ground in Bhutan, and a new generation of young athletes is stepping up in these dynamic sports.
