Chencho & Ugyen’s Journey of Love, Fitness, and Family

The Iron Couple of Bhutan

Some stories don’t need noise. They don’t need grand speeches or big promises. They are told quietly, through discipline, love, sacrifice, and the way two people choose to live their lives.

This is the story of Chencho Drukpa and Ugyen Pema, a couple who have turned strength into love, and love into inspiration.

Chencho began his bodybuilding journey in 2004. Four years later, in 2008, he entered his first professional competition at Mr. Bhutan. His breakthrough came in 2010, when he became the first Bhutanese athlete to represent the country at the World Championship in Singapore, finishing an incredible 4th place in Athletic Physique. The following year, in 2011, he stood tall once again, claiming another 4th position at the South Asian Games, proudly representing Bhutan. That same year marked what seemed to be his last appearance on stage. For a decade after that, the lights went dim, but the fire within him never faded.

Chencho & Ugyen’s Journey of Love, Fitness, and Family

After 10 long years, Chencho returned. Not for fame, not for applause — but because bodybuilding was still in his heart. At 49 years old, a father of two daughters, and a business owner, he stepped back onto the international stage this year in Thailand, winning bronze at the 57th Asian Bodybuilding & Physique Sport Championship 2025 in the Men’s Athletic Physique Over 182 cm category. A moment of pride for Bhutan.

When he speaks about bodybuilding, his voice carries both strength and tenderness. He smiles, but his eyes glisten:

“This sport has given me so much. Next year, when the World Championship happens in Thimphu, that will be my last dance on stage.”

Beside him through all of this stands Ugyen Pema. She was never into fitness in the beginning. She hesitated, doubted, and laughed at the idea of lifting weights. But Chencho, as both husband and coach, stood by her side, nudging her, guiding her, and sometimes pushing her beyond her limits. Training your wife, he often jokes, is tougher than training for any championship.

But she did it.

From a hesitant beginner, Ugyen transformed into a champion. She went on to win the title of Miss Fitness in Mr. Bhutan in 2003 and again in 2021. And this year, her defining moment came at the 15th South Asian Bodybuilding & Physique Sports Championship 2025, held in Thimphu on 13th June 2025. On that historic day, she stood tall for Bhutan, winning two gold medals:

  • 🥇 Champion – Women’s Swimsuit Physique
  • 🥇 Champion – Women’s Model Physique (Over 155 cm)

She looks back at her journey and says:

“At first, I only thought of staying fit. But over time, I fell in love with building muscle. Fitness changed me. It made me healthier, younger, more confident, and even as a mother, it gave me a new way to inspire my daughters.”

At the Asian Championship in Thailand, she competed again, but the medal slipped away this time. Still, she walked off stage with her chin high. “I’ll work harder and come back stronger,” she said with determination.

Together, Chencho and Ugyen have become Bhutan’s first couple to compete as a mixed pair. Watching them on stage is watching a love story — a coach guiding his student, a husband supporting his wife, and a couple proving that dreams are more powerful when shared.

Off the stage, their lives are just as inspiring. They run Rooftop Gym and Dream Fitness Gym in Thimphu, along with a travel company. They raise two daughters in a joint family where love and support run deep. During their toughest training phases, their family steps in to care for the children and cheer them on from the front row. “We are blessed,” they say, and you can feel the gratitude in their voices.

It is not easy — managing time, strict diets, long workouts, and still being present as parents. Yet that is what makes their story so moving. In a world full of excuses, they show us what it means to live with none.

Chencho once said softly:

“Fitness is not about muscles. It is about showing my daughters that health is wealth, that discipline matters, and that no dream is too late. That is the real medal we win every day.”

Their story is not about fame or spotlight. It is about love, family, and the quiet strength of two people who chose to walk the same path together. They have given Bhutan medals, yes. But more importantly, they have given Bhutan an example of what it means to live strong, live healthy, and live inspired.

And as Chencho prepares for his final bow on the world stage next year in Thimphu, one thing is certain — the medals may fade, but the story of Chencho and Ugyen will live on.

“Strength is not built in the gym alone. It is built in the way you raise your children, in the way you support your partner, and in the way you show up every single day.”

Their medals will shine for a while, but their story will inspire for generations. Bhutan will watch with pride as Chencho takes his last dance in Thimphu — not just as an athlete, but as a father, a husband, and a man who showed us all that true strength begins in the heart.
