Despite having access to training facilities, she faced significant challenges in her development as an athlete. A major limitation was the lack of professional coaching, which restricted her ability to refine and enhance her skills to an international level. While local coaches were committed, the absence of experienced professionals created a gap in advanced training. Additionally, finding a consistent training partner proved difficult, as many young players shifted their focus away from the sport over time. The limited number of competitions also meant fewer opportunities to gain exposure and experience, making it even harder for aspiring athletes to make a mark beyond national borders.
Through persistence and hard work, Sonam has continued to push past these barriers, proving her resilience and commitment to the sport. Her journey reflects the struggles of many athletes in Bhutan, highlighting the need for greater investment in coaching, infrastructure, and competitive opportunities. As she continues to grow in her career, her story serves as an inspiration to young athletes looking to follow in her footsteps
Being a student-athlete is no easy task. Sonam has had to juggle her academics with intense training schedules, ensuring she excels in both fields. Currently studying Sports and Health Science at RTC College, she finds ways to manage her time efficiently. Since training facilities are not always accessible, she maximizes her time by focusing on fitness exercises, skill drills, and mental preparation.
She follows a strict daily routine that includes early morning workouts, study sessions, and evening practice. Understanding the importance of maintaining peak physical and mental condition, she prioritizes proper rest, a balanced diet, and injury prevention. Her ability to manage both her studies and training is a testament to her commitment to self-improvement.
As a dedicated table tennis player, she understands both the potential and the challenges of the sport in Bhutan. Having experienced firsthand the struggles of training, competing, and growing as an athlete, she believes that for table tennis to truly develop, there needs to be a stronger focus on key areas such as coaching, athlete support, competitions, grassroots programs, facilities, sponsorship, and career opportunities.
One of the biggest gaps she recognizes is the need for better coaching. Without professional coaches to introduce advanced training methods, players often struggle to refine their skills at an international level. She believes that local coaches should have more opportunities for workshops and mentorship programs to stay updated with modern techniques. A structured system where experienced players mentor younger ones could also strengthen the overall player pipeline. Additionally, high-performance training camps with strong sparring partners, financial support, and a focus on fitness, nutrition, and mental preparation are crucial for the growth of national athletes.
Another major area for improvement is competitive opportunities. she understands how essential regular tournaments are for player development. More local and national competitions should be introduced, giving athletes a chance to test their skills and gain valuable experience. She also sees international exposure as a game-changer, whether through exchange programs or participation in overseas competitions. A structured ranking system could further motivate players, providing clear goals to strive for. Schools and colleges should introduce table tennis as a structured sport to nurture young talent, while the establishment of more local clubs would make the game more accessible to aspiring players.
Beyond the competition scene, she acknowledges the importance of career security for athletes. Many players struggle with life after retiring from professional competition, and she believes programs should be in place to help them transition into coaching, sports management, or other roles within the sporting community. More job opportunities for national athletes would ensure that their dedication and hard work are valued beyond the game itself.
Through these improvements, she envisions a future where table tennis in Bhutan grows into a stronger, more competitive sport, providing young players with the support and opportunities they need to succeed. She hopes that her journey can inspire change, paving the way for the next generation of table tennis players to dream bigger and achieve more.
Her journey is far from over. With bigger goals in mind, she continues to push her limits, striving for excellence both on and off the table. Sonam serves as a role model for young athletes, proving that with the right attitude and perseverance, one can achieve greatness in sports and life. The future holds immense possibilities for her, and she is determined to make the most of every opportunity that comes her way.
