Team Griffins were Crowned Champions in the First-ever
Thimphu Women’s Basketball League
Thimphu, May 28, 2025 – In a remarkable display of skill and teamwork, the Griffins clinched the championship title in the first-ever Thimphu Women’s Basketball League after defeating RTC with a score of 68–36 in the final match held today. The much-anticipated final followed two intense semi-final clashes played on May 27, where RTC beat Education Squad, and Griffins overcame Phoenix to earn their spots in the finale.
A total of eight teams participated in the league, which began on May 12, 2025, and concluded today. The participating teams were Alala, Education Squad, Griffins, Phoenix, RTC, Team Elite, CNR, and B.Code.
The final match was attended by officials from the Ministry of Education and Skills Development and the Bhutan Olympic Committee, reflecting the growing support for women’s sports in the country.


To make the event more engaging for spectators, the organizing team also held a lucky draw for all attendees during the final match. Winners received various sports accessories as prizes, adding to the excitement and energy of the day.
The Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the final was awarded to Ms. Dolkar L. Norbu from Griffins for her outstanding performance, recording 26 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists, and 1 steal. Another highlight of the event was the presentation of a special award for the Most Dedicated and Supportive Individual Towards Basketball, which was given to Pem Chuki, also from the Griffins.


The Thimphu Women’s Basketball League was initiated to encourage, identify, and nurture talented young womenin basketball. It aimed not only to foster athletic growth but also to boost the self-confidence of participants and challenge gender stereotypes, thereby promoting gender equality through sport.
This pioneering league featured a diverse mix of teams, including two college teams, a high school rookie team, and long-standing local women’s teams, all coming together to represent and elevate women’s basketball in Bhutan. Organized by the Bhutan Basketball Federation (BFB), the success of this inaugural women’s league has encouraged to establish it as an annual event, mirroring the existing men’s league structure in the country. With its inspiring debut, the Thimphu Women’s Basketball League has set a new benchmark for women’s sports in Bhutan, paving the way for a more inclusive and empowering womens involvment in the sporting community.
