National Khuru Tournament 2025 Kicks Off in Thimphu

Thimphu, November 24 – The National Khuru Tournament 2025, organized by the Bhutan Indigenous Games and Sports Association (BIGSA), officially began today at Changbangdru, Thimphu, with 21 teams from across the country taking part. The tournament will run from November 24 to December 7, 2025, spanning two weeks of high-energy Khuru action. All matches are being held at Changbangdru, Thimphu. This year, teams from the eastern and northern regions have shown particularly strong participation, adding excitement and fierce competition to the tournament.

Previously conducted as an open tournament, the 2025 edition has been restructured as a gewog-based competition. This shift aims to promote cultural preservation, foster grassroots participation, and ensure that traditional Bhutanese games continue to thrive in the country. By involving teams at the gewog level, BIGSA hopes to strengthen the bond between communities and celebrate the country’s rich sporting heritage.

Following a knockout format, teams must secure a win in each match to move on to the next round, making every game crucial and highly competitive. Organizers have also called on the public to come and watch the matches, encouraging interested individuals to cheer for their gewog and favourite teams.

The National Khuru Tournament is more than just a sporting event—it is a platform for cultural celebration and community pride. By bringing teams from different parts of Bhutan together, it promotes camaraderie, healthy competition, and the preservation of traditional games that have been part of Bhutanese heritage for generations. The tournament also provides an opportunity for young participants to showcase talent, learn teamwork, and gain national recognition, further inspiring the next generation of participants.

With the opening matches already underway, it is sure to showcase thrilling performances, intense rivalries, and moments of sportsmanship that highlight both the skill and spirit of traditional sports at their best. The tournament promises to be a grand celebration of tradition, competition, and national pride.
