National Compound Archery Selection Trial Concludes
Thimphu, April 25 — The Bhutan Archery Federation (BAF) commenced the National Selection Trials for Compound Archery at its range in Langjophakha, Thimphu for two-days concluded today. The selection were held on April 24 and 25, 2025, aims to identify Bhutan’s top compound archers for upcoming international competitions, specifically for the Asia Cup Stage II scheduled to take place in Singapore from June 14 to 20.
A total of 11 archers — nine men and two women — participated on the opening day, with nine returning to compete on the second day. The trials are being conducted with support from the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) and play a crucial role in Bhutan’s preparations for international representation in the sport.
The trials are structured across two days, with performance evaluations split between both sessions: 70 percent of the final selection score is based on Day 1 results, and 30 percent on Day 2.
Each archer shoots 144 arrows per day, divided into four sets of 36 arrows. Each arrow carries a maximum score of 10 points, leading to a daily total of 1,440 points. On Day 1, archers shoot six arrows per round, while Day 2 follows a three-arrow-per-round format. Ranking weightage is assigned based on scores, with the top scorer each day earning full percentage points and subsequent scorers receiving a 5 percent deduction in weightage per rank.

“The competition was intense, and many of the players had been away from the sport for a while, but they still managed to perform well,” said Coach Ajeet. “The wind conditions were tough, yet the archers adapted and shot consistently. I truly appreciate the support and efforts of the Bhutan Olympic Committee and the Bhutan Archery Federation for making these trials possible.”The National Selection Trials mark a significant step forward in the development of compound archery in Bhutan and reflect the nation’s commitment to achieving excellence in international sports.

The selection trials are being overseen by two coaches — Head Coach Ajeet from Delhi, India, and coach Tashi Tshering. With the competitive scores achieved by the individuals during Day 2, the Bhutan Archery Federation selected all nine archers for a one-month intensive training camp at the Luv Khush Archery Academy in Kanhauli Deoria, India. The training program is designed to provide exposure, high-performance training, and joint sessions with the academy’s compound archery team. The camp will offer Bhutanese archers a valuable opportunity to adapt to higher levels of competition and improve both technically and mentally. The program will also focus on acclimatization to different weather conditions and increasing match preparedness for the Asia Cup.
Upon completion of the training camp, only five archers will be selected to form Bhutan’s Compound National Team and compete in the Asia Cup Stage II — a World Ranking Event that will feature top-tier athletes from across the continent. The national team will be led by Coach Ajeet during the tournament in Singapore.
