Samtse Cricket Club Crowned Champions
of Bhutan Cricket Super 50 Tournament 2025

In a stunning finale played just an hour ago at the Capital’s cricket ground, Samtse Cricket Club (Samtse CC) etched their name into Bhutan’s cricketing history books by lifting their first-ever Bhutan Cricket Super 50 Championship, defeating tournament favourites Dragon Strikers by 4 wickets.

Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, Samtse CC displayed remarkable discipline and intent, bundling out the experienced Dragon Strikers for a modest 135 in 40.2 overs. The bowling duo of Biju K Darji (3/32 in 7 overs) and Ramesh Limbu (3/24 in 8 overs) ripped through the Strikers’ line-up with tight lines and relentless pressure. Only Ugyen Dorji showed some resistance, scoring 25 off 62 balls, as wickets kept tumbling from the other end.

The run chase, expected to be tense given the occasion, was anything but that. Samtse’s batters came out with clarity and confidence. Manjit Singh anchored the chase with a classy 39 off 50 balls, while Taps Das chipped in a quickfire 29 off 27, taking Samtse CC home in just 31.2 overs, finishing at 136/3.

The final, which marked the end of a fiercely contested tournament that began on March 22, featured 9 top teams from across the dzongkhags. The teams were split into two pools:

  • Pool A: Dragon Strikers, Samtse CC, Revived Chhukhaps, and Druk Tigers
  • Pool B: SKD All Stars, Imtrat Dantak Dragons, Paro Cricket Academy, Druk Rising Stars, and Bajo Bashers

Samtse CC’s road to the title was not easy. Regarded as underdogs, they had a point to prove. And today, they delivered with resounding authority.

Speaking exclusively after the win, Sanjeet Biswa, the new captain of Samtse CC, shared:

“This is my first time leading Samtse CC. I’ve played for other teams before, but this was personal. It was tough to bring this team back into a competitive unit. We worked incredibly hard, match after match. Every single player gave their all.”

Team Manager Diwas Sundas was visibly emotional.

“This win brings tears to my eyes. We’ve never won a major tournament like this before. To see Samtse lift the trophy today is a moment of pride for our entire community. We will carry this momentum forward.”

Head Coach Ramesh Limbu, who also played a pivotal role with the ball, highlighted the spirit of the team:

“We don’t have star players. One of our players is just 11 years old! But what we had was unity, discipline, and a belief that we could compete. We practised under the scorching sun, often after school hours. The community backed us and today, that belief turned into victory.”

On the other side, Dragon Strikers’ captain Manoj Adhikari accepted defeat gracefully.

“We couldn’t execute our plans. Giving away 33 extra runs added pressure. The boys tried hard, but sometimes, things just don’t go your way. Congratulations to Samtse CC on a well-deserved win.”

The final was attended by Mr. Damber S. Gurung, CEO of Bhutan Cricket, who applauded both teams for an excellent display of cricketing spirit and sportsmanship.
