Tandin Wangchuk Defends Title as 7th Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Tennis Championships Conclude
The 7th Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel National Open Tennis Championships 2026 concluded today at the National Tennis Centre in Changlimithang, Thimphu, with a strong finish under bright and pleasant weather conditions.
The championship, which began on March 28, featured 63 players, including both Bhutanese and international participants, competing across multiple categories over nine days. Organized by the Bhutan Tennis Federation in collaboration with the Bhutan Olympic Committee, the tournament was supported by Bhutan Wine Company as the main sponsor, with a total prize pool of Nu. 200,000.
The closing ceremony was graced by Yab Dasho Dhondup Gyaltshen and Yum Sonam Choki. The final day featured a single match, the Men’s Singles Final, which brought the tournament to an exciting close.
Defending champion Tandin Wangchuk successfully retained his title after defeating Jigme Norbu in a closely contested match. The final was marked by long rallies and high intensity, with Jigme Norbu pushing the pace through aggressive shot-making and relentless movement. His energy kept the pressure on throughout, forcing Tandin to stay sharp and cover the court consistently. Tandin Wangchuk responded with experience and composure, managing key points with control and discipline to secure the win and defend his title.
Earlier in the tournament, the Under 16 Boys title went to Aarush Das, who defeated Tenzin Dudu in the final. In the Under 16 Girls category, Tandin T. Wangmo claimed victory over Kelzang. The Lucky Mixed Doubles category saw Jigme Norbu and Tenzin overcome the experienced pair of Yonten and Mandhoj in a match that highlighted a contrast between youth and experience. In the 45+ Veterans category, Dinesh Chhetri secured the title after defeating Doshing Lapcha. In the Women’s Singles, Tenzin Wangsel Lhaden delivered a solid performance to beat Lhasel Puendharica and take the championship.
From the opening day to the final match, the tournament delivered competitive tennis, close contests, and strong participation across all categories. With growing interest, rising young players, and consistent performances from experienced athletes, the championship continues to raise the level of tennis in the country.
