Thimphu Magics
A Historic Leap into SABA Club Championship 2025
For the first time ever, a basketball club from Bhutan will step onto the international stage at the SABA Club Championship 2025. This isn’t just a competition—it’s a historic milestone for Bhutanese basketball, a moment of national pride, and a chance for the Thimphu Magics to prove their hard work, passion, and resilience to the world.
The Thimphu Magics, reigning champions of the BOB A-League, have worked tirelessly to reach this point. Their journey has been one of unwavering commitment, rigorous training, and immense sacrifice. With Timeout Bhutan as their main sponsor and Bhutan Airlines as their travel partner, the team has left no stone unturned in their preparation.
Speaking to team captain Sherab Jatsho, his words resonated with both humility and determination: “This isn’t just about basketball; it’s about representing our country with pride. We know the road ahead is tough, but we are ready to face the challenge with discipline and teamwork. We ask our fellow Bhutanese to stand with us, support us, and believe in us. This journey is not just ours—it belongs to all of Bhutan.”
The team’s dedication is reflected in the sacrifices they make every day. Karam Wangchuk, deeply moved by the opportunity, shared: “Even though this is a club championship, for us, it feels like we are playing for Bhutan. Karma and Dhendup travel from Paro every day just to practice in Thimphu, but these sacrifices are nothing compared to what we are playing for. The passion and love for the game keep us going. Every time we travel back home, our minds are filled only with thoughts of basketball and how we can improve.”
Namgay Phuntsho Rabgay, another key player, reflected on how the game has shaped his life: “We are more than just a team; we are a family. Basketball has given me purpose and direction. Balancing work, practice, and other commitments can be overwhelming, but the love for this game pushes me forward. I wouldn’t trade this journey for anything.”
For months, the Magics have been training relentlessly, focusing on team communication, strategy, and unity. On April 1st, they will embark on their historic journey, with the tournament taking place from April 2nd to April 7th. No matter the outcome, they will return home on April 9th as pioneers of Bhutanese basketball.
This incredible opportunity wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC), whose financial backing, along with Bhutan Airlines as the official carrier partner, has enabled the team to compete on this prestigious stage.
While the Thimphu Magics have worked tirelessly to prepare, they recognize the challenges ahead. Competing without international recruits, particularly in key positions, will not be easy. However, this is only the beginning. With continued support from organizations like VEVS Global and Curtin University, the BOB A-League is poised to grow into a more professional league, attracting new investors and club owners. This evolution will allow Bhutanese clubs to recruit international talent, raising the level of competition and strengthening both senior and junior national teams.
Now, more than ever, the team needs the unwavering support of their fans, well-wishers, and fellow Bhutanese. Let’s unite as a nation and rally behind our boys as they step onto the international court. This is not just Thimphu Magics’ journey—it is Bhutan’s journey. Let’s show the world the spirit of Bhutanese basketball!
