The Thimphu Magics are gearing up to compete in the highly anticipated South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Club Championship, set to take place from April 2nd to 6th in Chennai, India. This prestigious tournament will bring together the top club champions from five South Asian nations—India, Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan—each vying for the coveted 2025 championship title.
As Bhutan’s A-League reigning club champions, the Thimphu Magics are gearing up to test their skills against the best teams in South Asia. This championship will not only challenge their abilities but also serve as a platform to showcase their resilience and teamwork on an international level.

With top clubs from India, Pakistan, Maldives, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan competing for the title, the tournament promises thrilling matchups filled with high-intensity plays, strategic battles, and exceptional athleticism. For the Magics, this isn’t just another competition—it’s a defining moment to elevate Bhutanese basketball, inspire young athletes, and make a mark on the regional stage. Fueled by determination and an unwavering spirit, the team is ready to give their all in pursuit of victory, aiming to bring home the championship or, at the very least, a podium finish.
The Thimphu Magics began their preparations for the upcoming SABA Club Championship on February 1st, receiving support from the Basketball Federation’s coaches. It wasn’t until the first week of March, however, that senior national men’s coach Kim Kiyong joined to assist with the team’s training. Despite the limited time to prepare, the team remains under the leadership of Nima Gyeltshen, who is optimistic about their chances in the competition.
“Although we’re working with a tight timeline and had to prepare on short notice, the team is training hard, and I’m confident about our performance,” Nima Gyeltshen, Head Coach said. “We’re hopeful of securing the title, and if not, at least a runner-up position.”
In his final message to the team and aspiring players, he urged youth to take action and showcase their talent: “There are so many young players with incredible potential, yet they hesitate to show it. If not now, when? I encourage everyone to dedicate themselves and work hard, because one day, your hard work will pay off, and you will shine.”
Sherab Tinku Jatsho, Captain acknowledged that the team had to prepare on very short notice, but he emphasized that every player is putting in their best effort during training. “Although most of our players are employed and don’t have much time to dedicate to training, everyone is working hard, and we are doing our best to prepare,” he said. Despite the time constraints, Jatsho remains hopeful that the team will give their best performance against the other clubs in the upcoming championship.
