Twenty Athletes Ink BEAST Contracts for the year 2025 – 2026

National Contract Signing Marks Major Step Toward Asian Games and Olympic Preparedness

Thimphu, 18 November 2025 — The Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) officially signed 20 elite athletes under its flagship Bhutan Elite Athlete Support and Training (BEAST) program yesterday, on 17th November 2025, marking the launch of the 2025–2026 high-performance cycle. The simultaneous signing ceremony, held at the BOC Conference Hall, formalizes one of Bhutan’s most strategic investments in elite sports development to date.

What is the BEAST Program?

BEAST is a high-performance support system created to identify, retain, and develop Bhutan’s most promising athletes. The program prioritizes quality over quantity, focusing on elite competitors with proven performance records and realistic pathways to continental and Olympic qualification. Unlike traditional development schemes, BEAST delivers targeted support — including monthly stipends, coaching, medical care, equipment, and funded international exposure — enabling athletes to train full-time without financial or operational barriers.

Why Was It Created?

Bhutan’s sporting history has been marked by passion and potential, but also consistent limitations — inconsistent support systems, limited exposure, and resource constraints have often prevented talented athletes from competing effectively at major international events. The BOC established BEAST to change this reality by shifting to a performance-driven model that invests deeply in a smaller, elite pool of athletes. The ultimate goal: raise Bhutan’s competitive standards and prepare athletes for success at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, and eventually, the Olympic Games.

When and Where Did It Begin?

The BEAST program was approved by the BOC General Assembly and Executive Committee in mid-2024 and operationalized soon after. Athlete selection, assessment, and monitoring systems were formally introduced in July 2024, and the first cohort was inducted later that year. Today’s signing completes the formal rollout of the 2025–2026 cycle, with all high-performance activities coordinated by the technical team established under the radar of the Bhutan Olympic Committee and respective National Sports Federations conducting thorough assessments.

How Does BEAST Work?

The program operates on three key pillars:

  1. Selection — Led by an independent committee of technical experts, ensuring transparency, objectivity, and merit-based decisions.
  2. Support — Athletes receive full-cycle assistance, including coaching, sports science, medical care, stipends, international exposure, and performance benchmarking.
  3. Review — Each athlete is evaluated quarterly, and contracts are renewed annually based on measurable output and conduct standards.

This structure ensures accountability, motivation, and data-driven decision-making throughout the program.

Impact and Expected Outcomes

The program is designed to generate both direct and ripple effects. Athletes benefit from structured long-term support, federations gain clearer development pathways, coaches and experts receive opportunities to work in high-performance environments, and the wider sporting community gains visible national role models.

Success will be measured across three horizons:

  • Short-term: Improved results, rankings, and qualification benchmarks
  • Medium-term: Breakthrough performances at the Asian Games, South Asian events, and continental championships
  • Long-term: Sustainable pathways leading to regular Olympic qualification

The BOC expects the BEAST program to become a defining mechanism for elevating Bhutan’s international sporting identity.

Looking Ahead

Today’s signing signals a renewed commitment to sporting excellence in Bhutan. By investing strategically in elite performers, the BOC is building a performance-driven sporting culture anchored in accountability, science-based training, and international readiness. The coming months will see BEAST athletes enter qualification events, training camps, and targeted international competitions as Bhutan prepares to compete — not just participate — on the continental stage.

As the 2025–2026 cycle unfolds, sports followers, national partners, and aspiring youth athletes will be watching closely. The BEAST program represents more than a contract — it is a statement of intent, a new standard for athlete care, and a bold step toward rewriting Bhutan’s sporting future.
