3rd Jita Kyoei International Judo Tournament for Children Concludes in Bhutan with Spirit of Mutual Prosperity

The curtains fell today on the 3rd Jita Kyoei International Judo Tournament for Children, an event that over five days transformed Tashi Pelkhil Village, Nazhirama, into a hub of youthful energy, discipline, and international friendship.

From 20th to 24th August, 75 young judoka from Japan, Thailand, Bangladesh, Mumbai, Darjeeling District, and Bhutan’s four judo clubs competed with remarkable spirit. Yet, beyond the medals and scores, the tournament embodied something far deeper—the very soul of Judo: Jita Kyoei, or “mutual prosperity for self and others.”

Organised by the Bhutan Judo Association, with the support of the Government of India and the Kobe-Bhutan Friendship Association, and endorsed by the Bhutan Olympic Committee, this edition stood as a powerful testament to how sport can nurture not only athletes but also human values.

In the days leading up to the competition, children trained under Japanese coaches and alongside judoka from Hanazono University. The tatami became more than a battlefield of skill; it became a classroom of respect, humility, and friendship. For many Bhutanese children, it was their first taste of international camaraderie, and a glimpse of how discipline and compassion can walk hand in hand.

Launched just two years ago, this tournament has already become a cornerstone of youth development in Bhutan. Its vision goes beyond the competition—laying the groundwork for stronger judo programs in schools, better facilities, and nurturing a generation of judoka who are as strong in values as they are in technique.

Karma L. Dorji, President of the Bhutan Judo Association, expressed the heart of the event in his closing remarks:

“When we speak of Judo, we speak of building character, not just competitors. This tournament is about creating bonds across nations, teaching children to stand tall in victory and humble in defeat, and embracing the spirit of mutual prosperity. For Bhutan, this is our way of aligning sport with Gross National Happiness—where discipline, friendship, and joy meet on the tatami.”

As the final bow marked the close of this 3rd edition, the atmosphere was filled with pride and hope. Children left the mats not only with medals but also with friendships, life lessons, and a belief that sport can truly shape a better future.

The 3rd Jita Kyoei International Judo Tournament concluded today in Bhutan on a high and inspiring note—its legacy etched not just in results, but in the lives it touched and the spirit it carried forward.
