Athletes, Teachers, and BOC Staff Participated in Pre-Yoga Session Ahead of International Yoga Day 2025

As part of the lead-up to International Yoga Day on June 21, the Embassy of India and the Nehru Wangchuck Cultural Centre (NWCC), in collaboration with the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC), organized a special yoga session at the BOC Hall in Thimphu on 5th June 2025. The session focused on promoting yoga for physical and mental well-being and brought together a total of 48 participants, including athletes from various sports federations, teachers from Yangchenphug Higher Secondary School (YHSS), and staff members from the Bhutan Olympic Committee.

This inclusive event was part of a broader pre-celebration initiative titled “Yoga for All – A Journey Begins,” and was held from 4:30 PM to 5:30 PM. The program featured a 45-minute basic yoga practice, guided by instructors from NWCC, and aimed to make yoga accessible and meaningful to individuals of all backgrounds and fitness levels.

The event sought to raise awareness about the importance of yoga in daily life, encourage participation in the upcoming International Yoga Day celebrations, and highlight yoga’s role in enhancing physical health, mental clarity, and inner peace. While the focus included national athletes, the active involvement of teachers and BOC staff reflected the event’s broader goal of uniting communities through the shared practice of yoga.

“Through this pre-event session, we aim to highlight yoga’s holistic benefits—not merely as a form of physical exercise, but as a lifelong practice for achieving overall well-being and balance,” said Sonam Tobgay, the program coordinator.

International Yoga Day, observed annually on June 21, was first proposed by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the United Nations General Assembly in 2014. It received overwhelming support from 177 countries, including Bhutan, and has been celebrated globally since its first observance in 2015.
