Bhutan’s esports scene takes center stage today as the Bhutan Esports National Championship (BeNC) officially kicks off at the newly transformed Norling Building in Thimphu. Hosted by the Bhutan Esports Association (BeSA), the four-day championship begins at 3:00 PM, bringing together the nation’s top emerging talent and marking a landmark moment in Bhutanese sports.

As the newest member of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, BeSA has designed the BeNC to empower youth, promote digital innovation, and professionalize competitive gaming. With a Nu. 1,000,000 prize pool, the championship provides a high-stakes platform for Bhutan’s rising esports talent.

Following rigorous nationwide qualifiers with over 2,158 participants, 138 finalists now compete on the national stage. The championship also reflects a unique cultural fusion. The official trophy, which will be unveiled during today’s opening ceremony at 3:00 PM, is an initiative and idea of the Department of Media, Creative Industry and Intellectual Property (DoMCIIP), blending traditional Bhutanese craftsmanship with a modern digital identity. This is further reinforced through the event’s Healthy Gaming philosophy, which encourages athletes to balance digital skills with physical fitness and mental wellbeing, supported through BeSA’s national Esports Registry System.

The opening ceremony will feature a high-energy exhibition match with two surprise personalities, adding excitement to the launch. The event recognizes its principal industry development partners, the Department of Entrepreneurship and Employment (DoEE) and the Department of Media, Creative Industry and Intellectual Property (DoMCIIP). The event is also supported by Bhutan Agro Industries, TashiCell, and the Gov Tech Agency. With support from DoEE, over 30 young Bhutanese are being trained in digital esports production of international standards and esports startup management. The championship also serves as a talent pipeline for Team Bhutan in international competitions, ensuring a world-class live event for spectators.
