Bhutan Gears Up for World Volleyball Day with Inaugural School Volley Cup 2025
Bhutan Volleyball Federation (BVBF)
As the global volleyball community prepares to mark the first-ever World Volleyball Day on 7 July 2025, Bhutan joins the global celebration by launching a landmark national school-level tournament. The Bhutan Volleyball Federation (BVBF) will host the inaugural School Volley Cup 2025 from 7th to 9th July, bringing together school teams from across the country in a spirited showcase of youth talent and sportsmanship. This special event is proudly platinum-sponsored by Woezer Events, whose support has helped make the tournament possible and more impactful.

World Volleyball Day, launched by the Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB), commemorates the very first public demonstration of volleyball by the sport’s inventor, William G. Morgan, in 1895. The day is envisioned as an annual celebration to honor the game’s power to inspire, unite, and empower communities across the globe.
In alignment with this spirit, Bhutan’s School Volley Cup will be held from 7th to 9th July 2025 at the volleyball arena in Thimphu. The tournament has received an overwhelming response, with 44 school teams from 14 Dzongkhags registering to participate. Over 400 student-athletes—including 32 boys’ teams and 11 girls’ teams—will compete in what is shaping up to be one of the most inclusive and dynamic school-level sports events in Bhutan’s recent history.
Schools from across the country—from remote highlands to urban centers—are sending their best young players to the capital. Teams from Dzongkhags such as Sarpang, Zhemgang, Pemagatshel, Dagana, Wangdue, Punakha, Mongar, Trongsa, Gasa, Chukha, Samtse, Paro, Haa, and Thimphu will take part, showcasing the sport’s growing popularity and reach in Bhutan.

This tournament is not just about competition—it’s about inspiration and opportunity. According to BVBF, the objectives of the School Volleyball Cup are threefold:
To promote and brand volleyball as a youth-friendly sport across Bhutan.
To identify young volleyball talents who could represent Bhutan on national and international platforms.
To offer youth from remote areas the chance to play in international-standard facilities, helping bridge the gap in access to quality sports infrastructure.
BVBF officials shared that the original plan was to host eight teams representing eight Dzongkhags. However, the unexpectedly high level of interest and enthusiasm from schools has transformed the event into a truly national celebration of volleyball.

“This is a historic moment for volleyball in Bhutan,” said a spokesperson from the Bhutan Volleyball Federation. “Not only are we celebrating the sport’s global recognition through World Volleyball Day, but we are also taking meaningful steps to develop our future national athletes. We hope this becomes an annual tradition.”
The event is expected to draw a crowd of enthusiastic fans, families, and sports lovers, and will serve as a powerful platform for youth engagement, community building, and national pride.
