Bhutan Olympic Committee Launches ‘Junior Giants’ to Train Tall Youth for National Sports
The Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) has officially launched the Junior Giants of Bhutan, a unique and visionary national sports program designed to identify and train tall youth athletes from across Bhutan. The program officially kicked off today at the BOC headquarters in Thimphu, bringing together selected participants for orientation and registration after two months of online and field-based sign-ups.
This newly launched initiative is the first of its kind in Bhutan, focusing exclusively on athletically gifted tall youth and aiming to turn their height into an advantage across core sports like basketball, volleyball, athletics, and archery. Under the slogan “Rise Beyond Limits, Play Beyond Boundaries,” the program seeks to foster talent, encourage inclusivity, and build pathways into professional sports for tall youth from both urban centers and remote Dzongkhags.
The Junior Giants of Bhutan program not only promotes physical diversity but also aligns with the broader mission of BOC to develop future-ready athletes. The camp’s curriculum will include expert coaching, sports-specific training, talent identification, and professional mentorship—offering these young giants an unprecedented opportunity to thrive in national and international sports.
Beginning 7th July and continuing through 12th July 2025, the 6-day Junior Giants Talent Development Camp will feature specialized sessions each day:
- Day 1: Athletics at BAAF Track and Field
- Day 2: Basketball at Swimming Pool Complex
- Day 3: Archery at Langjophaka Archery Range
- Day 4: Volleyball at Changlimithang National Volleyball Arena
- Day 5: Talent Assessment by the Technical Team
- Day 6: Closing and Awards Ceremony at BOC HQ

Each session is being conducted in partnership with relevant Bhutan sports federations, ensuring quality training and talent evaluation across disciplines.
The launch of the Junior Giants of Bhutan quietly marked a powerful shift in the country’s sporting narrative. More than just a new program, it signaled the beginning of a movement to redefine how tall youth are seen and supported in Bhutan—no longer overlooked, but now nurtured, trained, and positioned for greatness through a platform built specifically for their unique strengths and potential.
The program’s Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) include the number of participants registered, selection into National Sports Federations (NSFs), participation in regional competitions, and increased representation from underserved regions. Social media outreach and engagement will also play a key role in spreading awareness and showcasing success stories.
