There are stories that inspire us for a moment, and then there are stories that stay in our hearts and quietly change us. As we prepare to host the 12th edition of the Bhutan International Marathon on 7th March 2026, we are deeply honoured to welcome a runner whose journey reflects the very soul of this race. Leong Wai Leng is not simply coming to Bhutan to run. She is coming here carrying a story of courage, survival, and an ascent that goes far beyond mountains.

Her journey did not begin with a medal or a starting horn. It began in a hospital room, with a diagnosis that changed her life. When she was told she had breast cancer, everything shifted. The future felt uncertain. Days became filled with medical appointments, treatments, chemotherapy, exhaustion, and the emotional weight that such news brings to a family. There were moments of fear and vulnerability. There were days when strength felt distant and the path ahead seemed unclear.

Yet even in those fragile moments, something powerful was taking shape within her. Strength does not always arrive loudly. Sometimes it builds quietly in the darkest hours.

After enduring treatment, when her body was still healing and her energy not fully restored, she chose movement. It began simply. A short walk. A slow jog. A few careful steps forward. Her body resisted. Fatigue lingered. Doubt tried to return. But with every step she was reclaiming ownership of her life. Running became more than exercise. It became her declaration that she was still here and that her story was not finished.

Over time, those small efforts transformed into remarkable endurance. She trained consistently, patiently rebuilding her stamina and confidence. In 2025, she achieved what once would have seemed unimaginable. She completed a 110.5 kilometre ultramarathon within 24 hours, becoming the first breast cancer survivor in Malaysia to accomplish such a feat. This historic achievement was recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records and widely reported, including by Free Malaysia Today.

But beyond recognition and headlines lies the true heart of her accomplishment. Imagine running through the night after everything her body had endured. Imagine pushing forward when your muscles are depleted and your mind is searching for reasons to stop. Every kilometre she covered was layered with memories of hospital corridors, of quiet prayers, of uncertainty about tomorrow. Finishing that ultramarathon was not about proving anything to the world. It was about honouring the battle she had already survived.

This is why her presence at the Bhutan International Marathon carries such meaning.

Our marathon is not designed to be easy. It moves through valleys and along rivers before gradually rising toward the mountains. The course demands patience and humility. The climbs test the lungs. The distance tests the mind. Yet this is precisely where the beauty lies. In Bhutan, ascent is not just physical. It is symbolic. Our landscape teaches us resilience. Our philosophy reminds us that happiness is not something handed to us. It is something cultivated through perseverance, balance, and inner strength.

This year’s theme, The Ascent of Happiness, is more than a phrase. It is a reflection of who we are and what this marathon represents. Happiness is discovered in the climb. It is found when the legs grow heavy but the heart grows stronger. It appears in the shared encouragement between runners, in the smiles from communities along the route, and in the quiet realization that we are capable of more than we once believed.

Leong Wai Leng’s life embodies this ascent. Her happiness was not given to her without struggle. She climbed toward it step by step through recovery, through rebuilding her body, through confronting fear and choosing hope. When she runs in Bhutan, she will not only be covering distance. She will be continuing her personal ascent, inspiring others to begin theirs.

For survivors watching from afar, she represents hope. For fellow runners standing beside her at the starting line, she represents courage. For all of us, she is a reminder that the greatest victories are often the ones fought in silence.

As the premium partner in organising this event, the Bhutan Olympic Committee takes immense pride in the value the Bhutan International Marathon has created over the years. This race has grown into more than a sporting event. It is a platform where stories of resilience meet the serenity of our mountains. It is a bridge connecting nations, cultures, and personal journeys. It is a celebration of the human spirit.

On 7th March 2026, when runners gather at the start line, each person will carry a different reason for being there. Some will run to challenge themselves. Some will run to heal. Some will run to honour someone they love. Among them will be a woman who once fought for her life and chose to turn that fight into forward motion.

There will be cheers and excitement, but there will also be quiet, powerful moments when runners feel something deeper within themselves. That is the true meaning of The Ascent of Happiness. It is rising after hardship. It is choosing light after darkness. It is discovering joy not because life was easy, but because you had the courage to climb.
