Bhutan’s Historic Championship Trophy

Bhutan’s Historic Championship Trophy

Some objects quietly become part of a nation’s story. This trophy is one of them. At first glance, it may simply look like a beautiful championship cup. But behind its bronze surface lies a story that goes back more than fifty years, to a time when tennis in Bhutan was only beginning to find its place.

This trophy was handcrafted in Bhutan in 1974 during the Coronation of His Majesty the Great Fourth King, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The coronation itself was a historic moment for the country. Leaders and guests from around the world gathered in Thimphu as Bhutan celebrated the formal coronation of the young King who would go on to shape the modern Bhutan we know today.

Around that time, sports were slowly growing in Bhutan, and tennis was among the games that began capturing people’s interest. His Majesty the Fourth King was known to enjoy sports and was particularly fond of playing tennis. For many who witnessed those early days, the sight of the King playing the sport inspired curiosity and enthusiasm among young Bhutanese.

It was during this same period that Bhutan saw one of its earliest national tennis tournaments. To mark the occasion, this trophy was commissioned under the command of His Majesty. Inspired by the elegance of the famous Wimbledon Trophy, the cup was created through bronze casting and carefully handcrafted by Bhutanese artisans. It was not simply made as a prize, but as a symbol of encouragement for a sport that was still finding its roots in the country.

Some trophies shine because they are polished. This one shines because of the story it carries.

Decades have passed since then. Tennis courts have changed, new players have emerged, and the sport has grown steadily across Bhutan. Yet this trophy has remained a constant presence through it all. Recently refurbished with care, the cup continues its journey as a rolling trophy, linking today’s players with the early days of Bhutanese tennis. Every champion who lifts it becomes part of a story that began in 1974.

This historic trophy will once again be awarded during the 7th Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel National Open Tennis Championships 2026, organized by the Bhutan Tennis Federation in collaboration with the Bhutan Olympic Committee and supported by Bhutan Wine Company. The championship will be held from March 28 to April 5, 2026 at the National Tennis Centre in Changlimithang, Thimphu, bringing together players from across the country.

Dedicated to His Royal Highness Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, the tournament has grown into one of Bhutan’s most respected national tennis events. It is not only a competition but also a celebration of the sport’s journey in Bhutan.

This year’s championship will feature six categories: Men’s Singles, Women’s Singles, U-16 Boys’ Singles, U-16 Girls’ Singles, Lucky Mixed Doubles, and Veterans’ Singles (45+), with a total prize pool of Nu. 200,000.

Time has passed, generations of players have come and gone, but this trophy remains a symbol of where Bhutanese tennis began. From its creation during a royal coronation to the modern courts of today, it continues to connect history with the passion of new players. And as the next champion lifts this cup, the story of Bhutanese tennis will move forward once again.
