RTC and BOC Renewed MoU to Continue Sports Scholarship Programme

Royal Thimphu College (RTC) and the Bhutan Olympic Committee (BOC) renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) today, reaffirming their shared commitment to supporting Bhutanese athletes in pursuing higher education while continuing their sporting careers.

The MoU, first signed in 2012, has been renewed every three years as part of the continued collaboration between the two institutions. This year’s signing marks the fifth renewal of the agreement, reflecting the strength and continuity of the partnership. To date, 96 students have benefited from the RTC–BOC Sports Scholarship Programme.

Sonam Karma Tshering, Secretary General of the Bhutan Olympic Committee, shared that the scholarship programme has enabled the committee to support deserving and high-performing athletes, allowing them to further their academic pursuits while continuing to develop in their respective sporting careers.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Shiva Raj Bhattarai, President of Royal Thimphu College, highlighted the positive impact of the scholarship initiative. He noted that the programme has provided young athletes with valuable opportunities to pursue higher education while continuing their journey in sports, and expressed hope that the partnership will continue to benefit aspiring athletes in the future.

The renewal ceremony was attended by officials from both institutions. From the Bhutan Olympic Committee, Sonam Karma Tshering, Secretary General; Sonam Namgyel, Assistant Program Officer; and Jamyang Choden, Assistant Human Resource Officer were present.

Representing Royal Thimphu College were Dr. Shiva Raj Bhattarai, President; Dechen Dolkar, Registrar; Sanjay Pradhan, Deputy Registrar; and Jigme Tashi, Associate Dean.

The renewed MoU further strengthens the shared vision of RTC and BOC to promote sporting excellence, nurture athletic talent, and provide student-athletes with meaningful opportunities to succeed both academically and in sports.
