Milan, Italy | 4 February 2026
His Royal Highness Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuck has today been re-elected to an eight-year term as a Member of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the 145th IOC Session held in Milan, Italy. The re-election reaffirms Bhutan’s rare and distinguished presence at the highest level of global sports governance.
Among the 206 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) worldwide, only 15 NOC representatives are elected as Members of the IOC, the supreme decision-making body of the Olympic Movement. His Royal Highness is one of these 15 representatives, placing Bhutan within an exclusive group of nations entrusted with shaping the future of the Olympic Movement at its highest level.
The IOC Session serves as the supreme authority of the Olympic Movement. It holds the exclusive mandate to amend the Olympic Charter, elect the IOC President, select host cities for the Olympic Games, and approve the recognition of National Olympic Committees and International Federations.
