ICC Women’s Cricket Week Begins in Bhutan

A Celebration of Empowerment, Dreams, and the Spirit of the Game

The RMD Centre in Babesa was alive with joy and excitement this morning as Bhutan proudly joined the rest of the world in celebrating the first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket Week. The indoor cricket event, organized by Bhutan Cricket, brought together 435 young girls from 11 schools across Thimphu, forming 72 teams representing 72 countries — all sharing one passion: cricket.

The global initiative, timed with the Women’s World Cup, is designed to promote and celebrate women’s cricket everywhere. It encourages each nation to host events that inspire girls to play, lead, and dream bigger through the game. In Bhutan, that spirit was beautifully on display — the laughter, the cheers, and the thud of the ball against the bat told a story of how far women’s cricket has come in our small Himalayan nation.

It’s hard to believe that women’s cricket in Bhutan began back in 2006 with just 65 players. Fast forward to today, and there are now over 29,000 women and girls playing cricket — not counting those just picking up the game at the grassroots. Cricket has quietly become one of the most popular school sports in the country, teaching teamwork, discipline, and confidence to thousands of young Bhutanese girls.

Because here in Bhutan, cricket isn’t just a sport. It’s becoming a voice — one that says to every young girl, you belong on the field too.
