7th Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel National Open Tennis Championships 2026 Begins in Thimphu
The 7th Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel National Open Tennis Championships 2026 commenced today at the National Tennis Centre in Changlimithang, Thimphu, bringing together a total of 63 participants from across the region.
The tournament features 59 Bhutanese and 4 Indian players, reflecting a growing level of competition and increasing regional participation in Bhutan’s tennis scene. The inaugural ceremony was graced by Tshewang Chophel Dorji, Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD), as the chief guest.
Organised by the Bhutan Tennis Federation in collaboration with the Bhutan Olympic Committee and sponsored by Bhutan Wine Company, the championship will run from March 28 to April 5. The competition features a wide range of categories, including men’s and women’s singles, lucky mixed doubles, U-16 boys’ and girls’ singles, and veteran singles for players aged 45 and above. With a total prize pool of Nu. 200,000, the tournament is expected to deliver exciting and closely contested matches.
Officials expressed confidence that the championship will not only provide a strong platform for players to showcase their skills but also contribute to the continued growth and development of tennis in Bhutan. The tournament will continue over the coming days, with spectators invited to witness the action and support the players.
