Paro FC and the Man Who Dared to Dream
Beyond the Mountains

An exclusive feature by Victor Gurung, Chief of Media, Digital Innovation & Technical Solutions at the Bhutan Olympic Committee

Some dreams don’t just take flight—they lace up their boots and chase the impossible down the pitch, sprinting past doubt and disbelief like it’s just another defender. If you want to see one of those dreams live and breathing, come August 12, 2025, to Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu, Bhutan, where Paro FC will face Afghanistan’s Abu Muslim FC.

Bhutan, that mystical kingdom tucked high in the Himalayas, is more often celebrated for its breathtaking mountain peaks and peaceful monasteries than for roaring stadiums. Yet beneath those serene skies, a quiet football revolution has been gaining ground, fueled by hope, hard work, and one man’s unshakable vision.

His name is Karma Jigme. Once a successful resort owner, Karma didn’t see football as just a game. To him, it was a way to build community, to open doors, to give a nation’s youth something bigger than themselves—a dream worth chasing. He founded Paro FC not simply to win trophies, but to ignite a movement that reaches far beyond the pitch.

It’s a story that could’ve been written in the stars. Bhutan’s football roots trace back to dusty village fields and humble beginnings. The country’s early forays into international football were tough—often crushing. But in the face of adversity, a slow-burning fire of passion grew. By 2013, the Bhutan Premier League was born, and Karma’s Paro FC soon emerged as a powerhouse, dominating the league with five titles from 2019 to 2024.

But Paro’s success isn’t measured in trophies alone. Karma’s visionary programs—“Catch Them Young” and “Keep Them Moving”—have become a blueprint for grassroots football across Bhutan. These aren’t just football drills; they’re lifelines. They reach into remote villages, finding kids with nothing but a dream and giving them discipline, purpose, and a shot at greatness.

His Majesty recognized Karma’s impact, awarding him the National Order of Merit (Silver) on Bhutan’s 117th National Day—not for a single goal or game, but for transforming football into a tool for national unity and social progress.

And then came the moment that sent shockwaves across Asia. In August 2024, Karma pulled off a bold, game-changing move: signing Japanese superstar Keisuke Honda for Paro FC’s AFC Challenge League playoff run. This was no flash in the pan. It was a strategic masterstroke that thrust Bhutanese football onto the world stage. For children tucked away in Himalayan villages, seeing Honda wear Paro’s orange was a seismic shift in what they believed possible.

The message was clear: If Honda can come to Bhutan, why can’t I play anywhere in the world?

Now, as the Afghan champions Abu Muslim FC step onto Bhutanese soil, Paro FC faces a defining moment. This is more than a game. It’s a collision of cultures and ambitions—two nations hungry for respect, battling for a place on Asia’s grandest stage. Abu Muslim arrives with experience and fire, but Paro has home advantage, passion, and the weight of an entire country’s hopes.

Karma’s words echo across the stadium and beyond:
“Every sleepless night was for this day. When our boys step onto that pitch, they carry not just the Paro badge—they carry the hopes of Bhutan. Every cheer counts. Every heartbeat counts. This isn’t just football. It’s Bhutan telling Asia—we belong.”

This is an invitation to every Bhutanese dreamer and believer: fill Changlimithang with your voices, your flags, your passion. Be the thunder in the mountains. Because Paro FC’s journey—from quiet villages to this moment—is proof that no dream is too small, and no mountain too high.

Under Karma’s stewardship, Paro FC isn’t just a club—it’s an institution built to last. Beyond the pitch, it’s a beacon of social change, turning football fields into classrooms, training grounds into community hubs, and players into role models. Karma’s vision extends beyond men’s football, with women’s programs emerging to ensure Bhutan’s football renaissance is inclusive and transformative.

As the sun rises over the Himalayas on match day, casting golden light on Paro FC’s training grounds, it illuminates more than just a team. It lights a path for an entire nation dreaming bigger than ever before.
